I'm leaning towards an X-Box 360..now that the PS3 and Wii have come out..I'm hoping the x-box price will come down.

I like the look of the games for the x-box...

can't wait to play Call of Duty 3 (not being released for the PC).

I also like to hack around with stuff...are there all sorts of "Goodies" available for the 360 yet??

Please point a console Newbie in the fight direction...

Last Console I bought was a Turbografx 16!!!

Thanks

Larry

i'm not a console guy, but i picked up an xbox after the 360 came out for $15 bucks with a broken dvd drive.

fixed it up, and some...*modifications*, and i can't be happier, i have a fully functioning media center, and i can still play games!

I was in the same boat Larry, I hadn't owned a console since Nintendo 64 so (1997?) I bought a Xbox 360 Premium at Micro Center on BF because of the $100 rebate, I still think the PS3 is way too much money personally. The Wii is fun but I guess I wasn't that impressed, I am still considering buying one though next year when online multiplayer launches.

I'm a sucker for multiplayer games and xbox live works really well for it. I picked up Rainbow Six Vegas on 360 and it looks insane on HD, going to pick up Gears Of War next. You should check out the demo stations at stores for the PS3/Wii and see what you think of it before deciding. Oh FYI this is coming from a hardcore PC Gamer all my life too so I'm not being biased on this whole (Console Fanboy War thing).

As I see it Xbox 360 & Wii would be my prime choices.

I've never owned a console. And today I played a 360 for the first time. Not impressed. The graphics were all jaggy and load times were sooo long. I would never buy it after that. So my advice is go to Best Buy or something where they have the consoles on display and give them a try, feel the differences for yourself.

Hey larry,

I personnaly have a wii, but the 360 looks like a very solid system as well. Very nice graphics, nice games, not to mention HALO 3 coming soon, and Gears of War. And yes thier are some hacks and mods for the 360, but not NEAR as much as was avialable on the original xbox. The only decent hack so far is the DVD Drive firmware hack which allows you to play "Backup DVD's of Games" on your system. Only problem with that is that you run the risk of bricking your system or getting banned from xbox live. I cant really talk any furthur about it or give you links due to the forums rules, but just search around utube and google and you can find stuff on it.

Biggest problem with the ones at best buy and such, is that they dont have very good TV's hooked up to the 360's. Also, after playing Gears of War, I dare say its the best looking game I have EVER played, console or PC. I think only crysis has the chance of upsetting that role. That and if you have a good HDTV, the 360 is all that much better imo.

Just go to a gamespot/ebgames. They always seem to have good HDTV's for the demos systems to play around with

Well, my info might be a bit dated, but I owned (or had a friend that owned and I used more then he did) most of the consoles that came out in the past few yeares with some exceptions:
N64, Playstation 1&2, Dreamcast, xbox, gamecube, and super nintendo, and they all had good and bad things.
N64&super nintendo: save games w/o hdd/memory card, ok gfx for the time, once the cartridges were dirty you were kind of screwed
PS1: my first console, good selections of games, good gfx for the time, memory stick had very limited capacity (3-4 games per stick)
PS2: good games and graphics, new version thin as h*ll, had to buy hdd (i think)
Dreamcast: My favorite, VMU, first system to have internet access, still has good gfx (I think), controller kind of ackward
xbox: good graphics, hdd (smaller then I would like, but it has one), xbox live, controller ackward, console itself big and ugly
gamecube: Small, different color choices, not the best gfx

Nice thing about HDTV's is they work very well for computer monitors. My 32" HDTV sits prominently on my desk, where it can display Half Life 2, dawn of War, or... well.. anything... in all thier sexy glory :)

Well I don't have a HD TV..Nor do I plan on buying one...

I don't watch TV at all...so I have no interest in HD....

IMO if you don't have an HDTV then forget the 360. I've never seen the PS3 on a standard TV so I can't speak to it but imagine it'd be the same way. The graphics on standard TV look pretty much the same as the regular Xbox but will look oustanding on an HDTV the difference would be equivalent to playing FarCry2 using a GeForve 5200 and then playing it again using 2 7900s in SLI. Seriously. If you're not getting a HDTV or using a PC monitor to play in 720p, then save yourself some agony and get a Wii.

As a long time console owner and Nintendo fan, I have to suggest that you buy a Wii. The Wii really is tons of fun, the new controller has a little bit of a learning curve, but once you get used to it it becomes second nature. I'd recommend Zelda: Twilight Princess and Call of Duty 3. Also the Virtual Console is getting started and new games will continually be added. The VC has older games from the N64 back to the NES, including Genesis and TurboGrafx16. So you may find some older titles you remember and play around with some you never played before.
Now, you won't get the graphics powerhouse you'll get with a 360 or PS3 (though this can also be a matter of opinion), but Zelda on the Wii looks gorgeous, IMO. COD3 is not bad looking either.
Plus, the Wii is not nearly as expensive as the other 2 current consoles.

That's my $0.02, but I'd really recommend it.

PS3 = Must have HDTV don't bother if you don't, it looks like crap on SDTV
Xbox 360 = Looks decent on SDTV but 720P is like night & day.
Wii = SDTV only much like GC and I don't think Wii will ever do 720P so your good to keep your normal TV.

I would honestly buy according to your TV, but if you really want to game get a decent TV/Surround Sound setup regardless. Nobody says you can't buy them all lol or both.

I bought a Wii and my friend owns an xbox 360 and between the two I personally like the Wii. The 360 I only played on a regular SDTV and so I can't comment on anything HD but the Wii has pretty good graphics and Madden 07 on the Wii looks really good, but if you're looking for fun game play I would recommend the Wii the controller is really nice. By the way I'm a hardcore PC gamer but I've been in need of a video card upgrade so I've been straying to consoles as of late.

Well..I am not going to scrap a essentially new 50" Mitsubishi television just to play games of any sort.

I really only watch one show a week, and most of my spare time is spent working around the house or on my computers.

You know..the only reason I was even thinking about getting a console was that there just doesn't seem to be any good games being released for the PC anymore.

I just finished HL2 Episode 1 and eventhough that was just more of the same, It was the first game I found that I actually wanted to buy!

The last new game I bought was Call Of Duty 2, and that was a year ago.

I really am getting desperate for a nice game to serve as a diversion from work.

I was even planning on upgrading my main gaming computer since my EVGA 6800GT was getting a little long in the tooth, and non DX10 compatible.

I guess I'm going to drop the console idea, and wait for something that I actually want to play to come out for the PC.

Thanks for the replies!!

Larry

If you must know..I like Survivor..

That's it...I used to watch HBO's series Deadwood, but it's over now...

I HATE television..I can actually feel myself get DUMBER if I watch it!

As for Sports...Nothing on the Television, I prefer listening on the radio!

Before I moved out here to Oklahoma I listened, or went to every RedSox Game.

If the Sox Aren't playing..there is nothing to get me interested.

Television just plain STINKS...

I have a career to work on, a job to do, a House to keep up, and a loving Wife to keep me ...AHEM..."Entertained".

Nope..Television can't even compete with that!!!

Seriously, if you're looking for a game that makes for a good diversion, get Zelda: Twilight Princess and a Wii. The game has 70+ hours of playtime so that should keep you going for a good while, plus from what I've played so far (bout 14 hours into it), it's been a blast. It's also got a great storyline and a great past storyline with the older games if you ever decided you wanted to play those.
