Quick Question.

For AMD cpus. if they are Athlon XP 1500+. They're actually running at 1.33 Ghz. Where and how did they come up with the 1500+ indicator ? Is this the (CPU Performance Rating) PR rating seen in programs like Sisoft Sandra ?

I read somewhere that the 1500+ is comparable to 1.5 Ghz P4 but since the new Northwoods are out, this comparison no longer holds right ? :)

The PR Rating is supposed to be in line with Thunderbird performance. An XP1500+ runs at 1.33Ghz, but is comparible to a 1500Mhz Thunderbird.

The comparison is meant to compare it to the Thunderbird procesor. Therefore a 1500+ which is 1.33 is equivelant to a 1.5GHz Thunderbird. The same with the PR ratings.

As for comparing to the Pentium4, many people have noticed that AMD has provided excellent performance per clock cycle and that they have managed to match/beat the P4 Willamette processor of the same speed as the PR Rating. Therefore a 1.5GHz Willamette is equivalent to a 1500+ XP.

Yes the new northwoods have made this story a little different, because they incorporated 512KB L2 cache, instead of the Willamette's 256KB L2 cache.

IMO this PR rating is only meant for those Joe's out there that only read the speed and don't know that GHz isn't everything. In all reality, a 2000+ XP is about equal in performance to a 2.0GHz P4. And with the price difference, is definetly the better buy. The XP also is better with multimedia applications like games or graphic intensive programs, although the P4 seems to be a little better with office applications.

I wouldn't put too much stock in amd's pr ratings. in realility tbirds aren't far off from xp's b/c you have to run winXP to see the perfomance gains. three added pluses for xp is that they are priced about the same as a tbird if not lower, overclock as well if not higher then the best stepping for tbird, lot easier to cool.
All I can say between the two is my tbird will keep up with most xp's until they surpass what mhz I can run. just knock hitman off the top ten for gnra hairpins over at ocua and he is running a x[email protected]

boost

well going from 1000 to 1533 should give you a nice boost to performance. Not sure about winME, cuz I've never used it.

Why exactly do XP's do better in winXP?

dgm6780: A massive boost! An extra 533MHz, SSE support, 3DNow! Professional etc. XPs are generally better CPUs, for any MHz the Palamino core in XPs will outperform the Thunderbird Core in...Thunderbirds

Arkaine23: Windows XP has a lot of optimisations for AthlonXPs to use all of its little tweaks etc.

oh BTW, the model numbers ARE SPECIFICALLY FOR COMPARISONS WITH P4's!!!
the tbird comparisons thing was in the beginning, but they are for comparing p4's now.

out of curiosity Arkaine, whyd u want XP and 2000?
just use XP:)
on a system as fast as ours, XP will have no slowdown and runs apps significantly faster than 2000, especially opening them. u can expect double the speed opening an app from 2000 to XP

xp & 2k

Because I have the space and I like having multiple OS's in case something goes bad. Guess, I'm just cautious about trying XP, and it looks different. I could always ditch 2k if it turns out I like XP better. I haven't tried XP yet cuz my GF just got it yesterday. She got the XP Home upgrade version... is that any good?

Apps load faster? Win2k seems pretty darn fast at loading apps to me. But boot time is slow.

I have an Azza KTA 133 or 133A, not sure. (actually it could be KT3-AD/KT3-AS/KT3-AV/KT3-EV , all those are listed on my manual and I have yet to figure out exactly what model I have, anyways on with my question.... Can I plug an Athlon XP into this board? I know for sure its a Socket A board, and the manual says it supports all Athlon and Duron Socket A processors. Any help?
