Want to share a printer on on pc with a second pc. Both PCs running XP SP2 with all updates. On pc1 I have Brother laser set up as local printer on lpt1. Share name is BrotherH. File & Printer sharing set up on both PCs. File & Printer sharing checked in windows firewall on both PCs. Both PCs on same workgroup. When I choose add printer on 2nd PC and then browse for a network printer, I see the workgroup name and the name of the PC with the local printer. When I click (or double-click) the name of that PC the printer DOES NOT show up below the PC name. I get nothing. If I try to connect to the remote printer by typing a network path, I get a screen asking for username and password. I went through all of this with a Brother tech and he informed me that I had a windows XP sharing problem. Please help if you can. Thanks.

So this is what I always do setting up a network/networked printer.

1) Under network connections run setup a home or office network, and make sure to go through all the little steps.
2) Disable Windows Firewall (Sometimes the network works when its on, othertimes it just doesn't want to work when it's on:shrug: )
3) Go to my network places and click view workgroup computers
4) Double click on the computer with the printer
5) Double click on the printer and it will install it

If you can access the networked computer's files already through network places->view workgroup computers then you should be able to just double click on the printer.

Tried step 1 to no avail.
Have not tried totally disabling windows firewall yet.
Tried steps 3 and 4 and never saw printer after double-clicking computer with printer attached.

can you access shared files on the other computer? Try copying something from the sharing computer to the computer you want to share the printer to.

If you're able to then its just a matter of getting the printer shared properly. Can always try to remove the printer then reinstall it. That will usually automatically set the printer as shared.

You seem to have permissions set and that's why it's asking you for a user name and password.
Try sharing the available folders you want to share on your network again using full read and write permissions for the selected files and printers.
