From my experience with WD, I'd say he has the jumpers configured incorrectly. With WD, if you have a single drive, it has to be configured that way. If you have a single drive, and set it as master, it won't work. To work as master, there has to be a slave drive. I've found that you can configure it as a single, and then add or remove a slave drive without changing the jumpers, at least if the slave is a Maxtor. I don't know for sure if that will work with another WD as slave.
