I just got a call from a friend who is having problems with her serial port. When she plugs something new thats never been installed the port doesn't see it. All I know is the computer was built in December of 2001 and her O.S. is Windows 98S.E. Any help would be nice cause I know nothing about serial ports.

Are the ports enabled in the bios? This is an awefully common IRQ saver.

Yea normally she has a digital camera hooked up to it. Today how ever she wants to hook up some sorta sewing machine thingy.

The only other thing I know is to check the manual..some devices like to have the drivers installed before you plug them in (with a cold boot) like USB does with my scanner.

Sorry I can't be of more help, I haven't used the serial port since my 486.

You could try the add new hardware wizard in the control panel. Sometimes it picks up more than plug and pray.
