Im looking for a new processor. I am looking to be able to OC to about 2.8ghz on water and possibly dual core. What would be better? An opteron 165 or somthing along the lines of the X2 series?

I would go with the Opty 170 over the 165. 10x multiplier vs the 9x on the 165.

Also with the opty chips you will get the bigger cache over majority of the X2 chips.

As seen in my sig I have my opty runnin @ 2.7 on air. Have not played too much with getting it higher.

The X2 you linked is fine. Yes, it has a smaller L2 cache than the Opteron, but it will still provide a decent OC and solid performance. Keep your eyes peeled as there may be some better deals coming down the pike. Check http://www.techbargains.com/ every day.

The 165 at that price is a good deal. There is never any assurance of 3GHz. It is always a crap shoot, but that is part of the fun.

The opterons went up $20 since I bought mine. I would also have to recommend the 170 but since they are so pricey now I don't know what to recommend.

Will I get somewhere around 2.8ghz? Because that would be fine with me. And will it be stable? I have a good wc system and a badass overclocking mobo.

I have the 4200+ and I'm sure it will hit the 2.6(easily does)-2.8(?) area on my board, and im sure that expert will hit 300HTT pretty easy (when they first released i saw someone hitting 500HTT with one!) making the goal that much easier. I dont think you would have a problem hitting your goal, but as always, your mileage may vary.

Im not sure what the max htt is stable. As I cant check it right now due to the fact I have no processor
Well.. I thought at one point you would have followed the nice guide sticky and you would have figured it out ;)

The 165 in the classies will work fine (tested for 3Ghz stable :p ), your DFI is a good high HTT mobo (how high has yet to be tested).

DFI = Opty 165, get it. Mine does 2.8 on air. It will boot and is somewhat stable at 2.9 but temps are the problem there (just an Ultra 120) but my mobo won't go high enough to do 3.0 but I think the chip would do it with a little more volts. Stepping is in my sig, came from the Egg's NJ warehouse about a month ago. Mine would do 3.0GHz on water easy.

What is all of this stepping business i hear so much about?

It's the memory stepping that is posted on the IHS of the chip. Some overclock better than others. It is somewhat essential to the overclock of your processor.

It is very essential IMO. Stepping usually equates to a max OC. There are flukes but the stepping tells a lot about the processor.

What does a good overclocking stepping usually say?
It differs for every CPU , each cpu class normaly has one or 2 steepings that overclock better than the rest
