Program to read hdd temps & smart over usb/firewire?

MBM and activesmart wont read my usb hdd. they seem to only detect hdd's over the ide bus.. is there anyway to read the hdd temps over USB or firewire?

I'm not sure if getting SMART data (such as drive temp) over a USB connection is possible, though if it has a WD drive inside, try running WD's windows diagnostics. It supposedly will detect and run various tests on internal as well as external drives. If it is possible to get SMART data over USB, you should see something for the drive under the "SMART Status" column and access all the SMART values (including temp) by clicking in that column.

If it does work, then there must be some kind of software to monitor external drive temps. If it dosen't, I would think it unlikely since WD can't even get their own utility to...


EDIT: Looked some more through the util, and it says that SMART status "may not be accessable for SCSI, FireWire and USB drives by this program" :-/
