I bet 10 to 1 it is your video card...you can always fool w/ your monitor settings...but if this is the only game that has it's gamma off then I would think it must be video card or drivers.....too bad, Q3 is a instant classic w/ loads of re-play value and mods galore.
Can you test w/ another video card? do any other games have the same probs...I had a Savage4 32 meg vid card..let me tell you that compared to the GeForce it sucked..It was okay for older games but Q3 looked Horrible on it, but we r talk'n S3 chip here not TNT...Q3 was made when the TNT was the newest thing..so it should play okay...but than again...it is a card that is getting dated. If you are a gamer than I reccomend a new card...even the GF2 will get u great performance....the GF3 & 4 are a little overkill considering that todays games are not even utilizing it's full features...if you can afford it...go ATI 8500, or GF3/4...on a budget..get a GFmx...or better yet at todays prices get a GF2 TI200.
Edit: sorry, did not see that u had a ATI card as well...that ATI rage fury max is better for vids than Games.

I had the exact same problem as you till I updated to Point Release 131. Then even when I went back into the game after I patched it, it was still really dark. Then I moved the games slider in the option's in the setup menue in the game. And everything brightened up instantly. Now everything run's great!

Im not sure if i should ask this but, is your version of Quake3Arena retail? Might be the problem. Updating to the latest pointrelease should have fixed the problem.

Yea I do have a retail ver. its OK in Win95, the other stuff that the patch adds like players, sounds, new effects are working I only get an error when trying to up brightness

I did try have the same problems w/ my ATI RAGE 128, I know all those cards are pretty old, but they run OK enough for me.
Plus I don't have the money to buy any new stuff
