i've got an old asus p4s533 board with a 1.8A that does 2.66ghz

i'm wondering if i upgraded to a 2.6ghz chip with a 400mhz fsb so i'd have a huge multiplyer (26), what could i expect, 3.4?, or is that just crazy

i want to upgrade, but not to a new board and the like because i'd like to wait to do that just before i go to college in the fall of 2005

thanks for the help

My first impulse was to say, "You don't want a 2.6 400 bus CPU.!"

But, maybe we need more info. Is there no PCI lock on that mobo?

The 2.6 400 bus is not known to be a great overclocker. The D1 stepping 2.4B will do 3.2 to 3.4 gig, but if you can't lock the PCI bus, that will never happen. If your mobo supports HT, then the 23X multiplier of the 3.06 would be good, except those CPUs are way too expensive in my opinion.

Honestly, if you are on a tight budget and want to hold off on doing a complete system overhaul for another year, I would forget about the CPU upgrade unless you are willing to upgrade the mobo too. Looks to me like you really need more RAM rather than a CPU upgrade. Perhaps invest in two sticks of good RAM can be migrated to your next system? Two sticks because you'll want dual channel with your next system. It would be nice to get 2X512 too if there is anyway you can afford it.

yea, there is no pci lock on this board, but once it hits 533 fsb, the clocks reset, and then SLOWLY climb up, the highest that they go is to 42mhz at 132 fsb
oh, and no ht at all

i had a stick of 512, but that died so now i have a stick of ddr266 that will do ddr420 with tight timings

i guess i'll just watch the ads, and get another stick of value ram, and then wait it out until i figure out what i want to do to wait for dual cores, or just dive into a dual opteron setup in a few months

oh, and thanks for the help

You could get another mobo... my 1.8A does 3.0 gigs at 1.57V with no problem ( it goes higher, but I get random crashes every week or so, so I lowered it) so yours could possibly do the same. I'm poss. getting a 2.4C D1 stepping b/c I got stuck on my oc and I want to go higher.

The early 1.8A often top out at 2.6 gig. The later C1 steppings will often do 3+ gig.

With no PCI lock, the most you can probably "reasonably" expect is about 150 FSB.

[edit] okay, stupid read again. im way too tired. i read it as p4T533..skipped the s. sorry. [/edit]

my board is the old sis version of intel's 845 chipset, and this board and processor top out at about 153, so that is the best it'll do, and that isn't because of the pci bus, (since it is bareley overclocked),but i think my processor maxes just north of 2.7ghz
