Question about SATA RAID

I have been wondering for a while whether it is possible to build a RAID which does "stripping" between two drives and then mirror that "strip" with a second "strip". If I remember correctly when a drive in a "strip" fails, you lose all of your info on both since the info is written and retrived from both at the same time. Are these correct memories correct and can you do what I have asked above to safe guard your information?

Yep its called Raid 0+1 or Raid 10. Also check out Raid 5.
