What would you recommend as the best CPU right now based on price / preformance ratio. With good overclocking, all around preformance, etc?

That is a pretty generic question. What do you plan on using the CPU for? Why type of applications, other parts of the computer play a part it all of it.

So, more than just what CPU your going to use, think about the entire system, and what you are going to use it for. Then I believe you will get a better answer.

At the high end I think the general view seems to be:

Athlon64 for games.
Pentium4 for Encoding and the like.

However you would find it hard to go wrong with either. AthlonXPs are quite cheap and still a viable option.

Plan on using the CPU for level design ( complex and large level design ), I'm currently using the Quake 3 engine, aka GTK Radiant, and am frustrated with the slowness of my current computer.
