Can I use a cable with a male connector, plug it into a female connector which ends with another female connector, and end with a male connector and still have it work properly. This is what I had in mind

Yes. Provided the connectors are wired correctly so that at the end of the chain where you get to the PC the upload and download signals are still passing correctly.

An office supply place like Office Depot should have the wall plates you'll need to wire your house.

I agree, I have a couple of 10baset wall jacks kicking around someplace... actually... I think they are from when I wired up my old office... If office max doesn't you can always try Compusa.

Like Gresyth said though, t's extreamly important that you wire it up correctly. Once you do one or two correctly you should be fine.
