At some point in the future I'm going to add a dvd to my machine.

Obviously, what I want to know is which drives are quiet. Right now, I use a 12x TDK burner for all of my cd stuff. I have been very pleased with it, and I want to make sure that whatever dvd I get will not sound like a helicopter. If it's quiet, it will replace the TDK for day to day cd reading.

I run:

xp 1700 volcano 6cu
epox 8kha+
256 mb ddr
10gb wd (will be replaced with seagate 60 or 80)
Radeon 64mb ddr (7200)
3dmark: ~3500

i promise you the slot slot 16x pioneer is super quiet. And to boot, the best dvd drive out. You can't go wrong with it and it is only 53 at newegg:D

NOISE! WHAT NOISE!

well, I personally don't consider noise all that big of an issue...I have always got a pair of earplugs handy when using my personal computer. Heck, I get grounded for using my harddrive, CPU,and CDROM at the same time.

What price range are you looking for?
DVDs are going down in price, and there are some great quality bargain buys out there. I will sift through them in keyboarding if you tell me how much you want to spend (or don't want to spend, as is more likely the case.)

(hehe, you know, the CORE 5 are almost all fully equipped now, mr_kennedy.)

The quietest DVD drive out is the Toshiba 1612 drive. The Pioneer is quiet also, but not as quiet as the Toshiba drive.

My Lite-On drive is rather quiet also, but since I have a Delta 7K CPU fan on that computer anything seems quiet!

The quietest hard drive out is the Seagate Barracuda IV.

I'm going with my Pioneer 16X slot load, I wish all drives would be slot load and this quiet after owning this beauty for almost a year :)

Yes. Pioneer 16x model 106s.

Last night, when Tim was over here doing the Stat review packet:

"Hey Tim, did you hear that?"

"What?"

"Shhhhh!"

This thing is so quiet, I need to can some fans so I get the feeling that it's actually spinning. Not so with my Yamaha 2200 burner. You can hear it. The Pioneer, though, is supreme! DVDs never looked so good on the TV.
