I was wondering if RAID 0 is stable in linux? Is there any software or drivers that need to be installed? I will be using two 40 GIG drives acting as one is that stable at all?

The reason I ask is because this will be acting as a server and I have not built a server or had a use for RAID until now? thanks~!

Sorry if this is incoherent I have a knack for doing that

Software Raid 0 is perfectly stable, I'm using it myself, as a matter of fact. All you need is support in the kernel, and the raid tools so you can set up the array.

Now, if you want to use one of those el-cheapo ide controllers like a Fastrak or Highpoint, there is some rudimentary support for those, but I think its pretty hackish and I don't know how well it ends up working overall.

If you're going to be using a real hardware raid solution, its going to be transparent to the OS anyways.

XWRed1 i am currently using the onboard highpoint raid controller thats on my mobo right now and the first 6 times i tried to install linux it didnt like it..i was wondering you you could recommend any REAL hardware raid controlers where there is no need to mess with the kernal or drivers? thanks in advance.

Maybe that one Adaptec or 3com ide raid controller (can't remember which brand it is).

Most scsi raid controllers should be transparent.

oh XW I know it ofcourse is faster I was just wondering if the speed was very notcible.

I am thinking about buying another 40 gig etc...

Its somewhat noticable, yes. I put quake3 and my other games on there, among other things, and they load a bit faster now.

Well, I've heard that the code for those cards is really dodgy, so I'm not terribly surprised.
