Iwill (ha ha) be building an AMD system this week (my first one). And I was curious others opinions of these two boards. I can probably get the Iwill for less, but I'm not as familiar with them. This will be for a 1.2 GHz T-bird, 256MB pc133, Leadtek Geforce 2 MX, TDK cd/rw, 52x cdrom,HD, blah, blah, w/ 300 watt psu (this will be enough juice won't it). Cool, drop a line if either of these boards are preferred, Thanks.

I've used both, I love the Iwill KK266, super stable, FSB overclocks to 160mhz (abit FSB only did like 142 mhz!), and worked on all multipliers i tried.
The Abit board gave me some weird problems when trying to overclock. It didn't like to do 1.33 ghz or higher on my 1 ghz AXIA, while my Iwill ran the SAME CHIP at 1400 mhz no problem!! (i'm at 1418 mhz right now).
The Abit worked fine for me at default speeds, but overclocking it didn't fair well at all.
300 W will probably suffice.

Go with the Iwill, its cheaper, stabler, more overclockable, all around better board in my opinion. Just an opinion though.

I'd go with the Iwill. I've had nothing but success with mine very stable very overclockable. I personal feel that a 300 watt power supply is fine. I would recommend a name brand though. On my antec I'm running a 1.33 at 1520, 1.85 watts, hard drive, cd-rom, cd-r, 5 case fans and a swifteck with no problem what so ever.

BTW this the first computer I've ever built much less oc'd. Therefore I wasn't familiar with any mobo's and it was very easy (after studying the masters at oc.com for a while).

Good Luck.

Cool, I kinda liked what I had heard about the Iwill before too. I'll probably go with it. BTW, is buying cas-2 ram worthwhile against cas-3?

I wouldn't buy anything but cas 2 ram. My memory is faster at cas two at 140 fsb than it is at cas 3 at 155 fsb. Plus there really isn't much price difference. I recommend www.crucial.com really good memory, good prices, free shipping.

Okay, now that all of this has been brought up I've got questions out the arse. I was planning on buying a SB Live Value to go with the comp, now an Iwill kk266, but I've been hearing that it can have "issues" with SB Lives. Is this really going to pose a problem? or should I go with another sound card (I don't want to use the on-board audio).

I am using an sblive value and I don't have any problems. I did though. Data corruption, and lockups during gaming.

I have flashed to the 0426 bios and I am using the newest via 4 in 1 drivers and my system is rock stable. I haven't had any sblive problems since I started using the new bios.

I am thinking about buying a kk266 motherboard since i already have crucial cas 2 pc 133 memory. I need to know what fan you are using and are you cooling the northbridge with a fan? Also i have a aopen 300watt power supply which runs great on my 1000mhz slot a , will this surfice? Do you think i will see a big improvment if i upgrade my cpu now.
I really apreciate your help
thanks

Good Luck.

Yeah, I'm REALLY surprised that the onboard sound is this good. More money for vid card! w00t!

My hsf is a Swifteck MC370-OA with standard pabst fan. I'm not cooling the northbridge just the stock greenie. I would say stick with psu you have. If it gives you any problems you can replace it later, but I don't think you will.

Do I think you will see a big improvement if you upgrade your cpu now? Well, that's a tough call. What do you use it for? If your mainly gaming you might be better off getting a really good video card. I don't see much difference from running my 850@1000 and my [email protected] in 3dmark2001. On the other hand it dropped about two and a half hours of the time it takes me to fold proteins (folding at home).

You might just want to upgrade to the new mobo and drop a cheap duron in there 650's are like $35 at newegg.com. Play with that for a month or two until the Palomino comes out and then drop one of those puppy's in there.

Just something to think about.

WOW!! This thread has been conducted with civility..kudos to all.

I have had three KK266 boards, and they are all good..I sold a system to a friend recently..so I've now only two. The boards are fast and stable, a great choice for someone building their first AMD based system.

There is a growing FAQ here, and a lot of support available in the overclocking community.

The issue of enough power is one that I always address before a build. I use Antec PP403X PSUs on my own systems, as they have enough available power to serve any foreseeable future need.

I just buy them already installed in Antec SX840 cases. For me, it's cheap insurance toward higher power useage due to higher clockspeeds, and their attendant power needs, as well as future power hungry video cards, additional drives, etc. Those are my ramblings on PSUs..I hope that you're still awake. :)

I had a quick question, will the Iwill kk266, the abit kt7a or even the new kg7 coming out , support the new palomino chip?

In short yes they will.
