Now that the 8x drives are starting to come out, the 4x DVD +/- RW drives are getting really cheap. There is even a no-brand DVD writer at Fry's for $89 - with no rebate!

I am of course considering something a little bit better, perhaps a Pioneer, Sony, TDK, or something like that - they seem to be around $140-150.

Any good recommendations from folks who actually own a DVD writer? Are you happy with it? Would you buy it again? What model #?

Thanks in advance!

William

I currently have a Pioneer DVR-104. I've had it since June of 2002 and have loved it. It runs like a champ and can burn pretty cheap media at 2x, DVD-R only of course. When my current supply of DVD-R's runs out (I have 19 left right now and they'll be gone by next Wednesday) I am getting a new burner. I've been looking and researching over the past few weeks and have really narrowed it down to 2 burners. The Pioneer DVR-106d and the Lite On 811s.

The DVR-106d does 4x burning of both DVD+r and DVD-R. From past experience I know the Pioneer's have the ability to burn generic media very well and the burned disc's work in my dvd player and friends dvd players. At a price of $116 (several vendors on Pricewatch seem to have this price) it is a very good burner and doesn't cost much at all.

On the other hand there is the Lite On 811s. It features 8x burning of DVD+R and 4x of DVD-R. Of course that depends on what media you use. The great thing about Lite On drives is that the firmware makers there come out with updates to support new media all the time. The Pioneer firmware team rarely makes updates. Also, the new 8x DVD+r and 8x DVD-R burners are just around the corner and are rebadged 811s's with new updated firmware. 8x burning burns an entire disc in around 7.5 minutes. The cost is a bit more, closer to $150 but right now Monarch has it for $139 + $4 shipping. If I get this burner, which has a slight edge over the Pioneer, I get to sell my DVR-104 and 52x Lite On CD Burner because the 811s features 40x CD burning as well.

The only other burner I'd consider would be a Ricoh or it's rebadge Optorite. The reason that those are nice is that they feature HD burn which can put 1.4GB of data on a regular 700MB CD-R. As I said before I'm leaning toward the 811s because of the future 8x DVD-R support that it will have, but the Pioneer is great in it's own as well, except for max of 16x CD burning which is just too slow for me nowadays.

I've got a cheap Lite-On 4X DVD+RW. I like it. The only problem with it is that it doesn't allow me to rip all DVD's (has a copyright fit with some.) *EDIT* This was because I hadn't set the region on it, I think. I've now set it to Region 1. *EDIT*

I have an LG DVD-ROM/CD-RW (GCC-4480B), however, that is great at ripping any DVD I throw at it. The LG is also the quietest DVD-ROM or CD-RW I have ever owned.

I just got one of the NEC 1300A's from newegg, and it rocks. It does 4x + or -R, 2.4X + or -RW, 16x CDR, and 10X CDRW. It completes a +R at 4x in 13.5 minutes. It is compatible with a wide range of media with the current firmware (1.08). It is the same drive sold as the Mitsumi and the TDK 440. And it is cheap at 101.99 shipped currently, and is very quiet. Highly recommended. If I were to spend more I'd investigate the 8x Lite-On mentioned above.

I have heard nothing but good things about the Pioneer DVR-106, media compatibility is supposed to be excellent it handles both +/- media formats and its a sturdy unit, I will probably be getting one myself in the next few weeks as they have dropped a lot in price recently and the media is not too bad a price now aswell.

The LiteOn LDW-451S had bad media compatibility to start with I know there where a few firmware revisions released to fix the problems although I dont know if they did. Lite-On usually makes good quality and reasonably priced drives but there where too many bad reports on that one.

Yeah the Lite On drives have had a lot of problems with incompatible media, but like I said they have released several revisions of their firmware to add support. The Pioneer drives are awesome because they burn the cheap media very well that's why I am still on the fence, I don't want to spend $1 or more per disc again.

I bought the Pioneer 106 last week and have had no problems at all with it. Will write to any media I throw at it at 4x and hasnt burned a single coaster yet.

From what i've heard the optorite 8X buner are pretty cheap, around 130 without rebate at my local stores. They can do HD burn too, considering the price for DVD media now, that HD burn can do alot of work :). but i have only read reviews from those who are already in love with the drive, and those reivews are bias, any one with reviews on the optorite drives would be great :)

I have the lite on LDW-411S and the firmware solved most every issue I am using Khypermedia (cheap O’s) Fuji and Memorex. Also it dose 4X on DVD+RW's. Plus I had no problem updated the firmware in a USB 2.0 case, 30 seconds max. For $90 at most places it is a real good deal IMO. As for the "Ripping" take a look at using “DVD Shrink” with “DVD Decrypter” (if needed) “Here” is an easy to use flash guide (3min your done)on how to use them.

thanks to all !!!

In the latest Best Buy flier they list a LiteON model 411 for $79.99 after rebates - I am most likely going to get one of those this week before the special/rebate expires :)

hmmm, i am also looking to get a 4x dvd burner +/-
my budget is < 100 (with a little going over)

i checked bestbuy.com and that rebate deal is sold out...

so anyways, can anyone make any other reccommendations...the nec model that larva bought seems pretty good too.

and where can i find the 411S for 90?

just got the LiteON 411 from Best Buy - what media to buy?

Our local Best Buy store still had some LiteON DVD writers on the shelf, so I got me one. $79.99 after rebates - what a great deal!

Best buy also has Memorex DVD media, 4x, 50pack, for $49.99 after special/rebates, and this applies to both the +R and the -R. (about $1 per blank DVD).

Now, what media should I buy? DVD +R or DVD -R?

This site has a lot of DVD Writer ratings as well as media ratings:
http://www.dvdrhelp.com/dvdwriters

I own a Pioneer 105 and I love it. The only downside is that it only burns -R/RW. If you're looking for a 4x drive I recommend the 105 or 106.

Edit:

I didnt notice that you bought one......

I would suggest getting Ritek G04 discs (4x media) or G03 discs (1x). G03s can be burned reliably at 2x with the correct firmware, but I don't know about your drive. If your interested, try searching the forum at http://club.cdfreaks.com/.

Not only is Ritek media inexpensive, but it's also some of the best stuff you can purchase.

I've written 30+ memorex 2x discs and have never had a problem with them. Some memorex dvd-r/+r are manufactured by CMC Magnetics. I have seen a lot of CMC hating on the dvdrhelp forums, however all of my memorex DVD-Rs were CMC discs, and I never had a problem.

Here is some info on memorex 4x media. Looks good to me.

In regard to whether you should get +R or -R it probably doesn't matter much. -Rs are supposed to be a little more compatible (about 2-5%) depending on the report/site you look at.

cool - just checked that site (dvdrhelp) , and my two DVD players do a little bit better with the DVD -R, so that is what I will try first :)

thanks to all !
