Hey all, I just thought of something. Does anyone know of how to use a remote or wireless device to turn on your computer? Instead of pressing the damn power button all the time. I'm looking to modding my comp for cool ideas. Let me know if you guys can help.

When it's on, you can use a very simple IR receiver. But to get it to boot, you need a much more complex circuit that run from the +5Vstb line.
You could use this circuit using DTMF to encode the signal, and giving you 4 (possibly 12) channels. As this is RF, you get good range as well. And the circuit is compact enough to get a "car alarm" style remote.

If you just want IR remote control, I'm using the WinLIRC receiver and it works perfectly. Take a look at the LIRC homepage and I'm using IRassistant to record the functions. Take a look at Heatseekerz.net for a good tutorial on construction and software setup.

Good luck!

UMM i think someone posted their remote on this forum, it is acyually avaliable commercially. BAsically, i take sup a pci slot and has an antenna that sits behind ure computer. U get a keychain like a remote car starter and you can turn on your computer with it.

why push a button, youd bush a button for the ir activator...
but think of it, you show up to a lan party, no one can turn your comp on, you walk through the door, press your button and it turns on while you walk to it, youd be the life of the party(at least at my smallish lan parties)

r u that lazy u can't reach to push a button? What has the overclocking world come to!!! :D

Tsk tsk tsk.... You along with everyone else who posts here are regularly as we do should know... It has nothing to do with being lazy.... it is simply something to do to your computer that is out of the range of the norm... hehehe and of course KEWL factor :D

lmao!~!

I've seen the PCI solution as well, but part of the fun is building it yourself. The PCI soution only got 2 channels as well. And if you extend the receiver to a full 12 channels, you could have like:

Power
Reset
Lock on sidedoor (need some parts..)
on/off caselighting
on/off fans
on/off some display on the front
oh, yes. Hydraulic door!

Well, there's just som much!

Think I got to build me one of these..

Amaesing: Check Fry's since you're in Cali and that's availablte to you. I saw one just this morning at Fry's for $25.

Hey, it's not about being lazy, just to make a cool mod. I wish I had a digital cam to show u my setup, I think you guys would be really impressed. I spent a lot of time on this baby. A remote would totally make it awesome! Cool, i'll check fry's. What should I ask for when i'm there, or what parts should I look for? Thanks guys for replying. More help or links would be great.

I built one of those IR receivers and set up winLIRC... it's pretty cool and everything works fine, but now I want to know how to design things of that nature... like this receiver and the serial tachometer I saw in a different thread. Anyone know of any decent sites or books dealing with building serial devices and serial programming?

hey, couldnt you just use one of those multi channel remotes that the hot rodding guys use to remotely open their doors, trunk, hood, and start the car with... its 12 volts... see yea, im going to check out my rod&custom mag for some idea's

my 2 cents

You mean you turn your computer off??? That's a good idea, I'll have to look into one for me. I already have an IR receiver for my AVerTV card...we'll have to check that out.

is there any way to actually rig a car alarm to your computer? one of those that has a button to start your car and arm/disarm the alarm. although the alarm part would be useless (unless you live in an area where people steal parts all the time), it would be cool as everyone else said to have a remote to start your computer. but we all know in the coolness factor, no remote control beats a real true to life car keychain remote in coolness... so is tehre any way to do that?

whoah! guys! you are going overboard HARDCORE! you can build a simple IR remote from parts from radio shack, it costs like $5 total. Gimme a few weeks and maybe I will write a how-to for you all.
