I came across a thread that discuss how to remove un-installed hidden devices profiles (not drivers) like your video card (also found WDM in the sub section of sound from your Device Manager) displays, USB, etc. Read this link for more details. This may help those who were having problems with newer cats.
I have used it to remove several versions of ATI's WDM from the audio section of the device manager as well as a few other usb devices that I used. For example, I have PS/2 keyboard as well as a usb keyboard. Little did I know that each time you move the usb to a different usb port you create a usb profile in your device manager. It disappears when you unplug it but its only hidden.
Examples included but not limited to:
-Install of different CPUs without a complete reinstall of XP
-Install of different video cards
-Install of different sound cards
-Use of USB components that have been switched to a different USB port.
-Use of different CD/DVD roms
-Etc
