Thanks to the crappy hsf clip on my Coolermaster hsf, one of the resisitors on my MSI K7T Turbo has broken off. I am unable to get it RMA'd, so I am going to attempt the repair myself. The resistor was labeled 103 which denotes it is 10k Ohm. Is it possible to use the larger cell-type resistors as a replacement? I saw them at Radio Shack for 75 cents/package of 5. Any advice comments would be greatly appreciatted. Also, I have never done this kind of soldering before, so if anyone has any instructions/advice on how I should go about doing it, please reply! Thanks!

It's not a simple task and not something I would recomend to an inexperienced solderer. Yes any resistor with the correct value should do it as far as I know, it may be worth you checking around pc shops or tv and video repair shops to see if an engineer will do it, they will obvioulsy charg a fee but at least there is a better chance of them succeding. If you can't afford what they charge or they charge more than it's worth then if you have nothing to loose go for it, but you would probabally be better off getting an engineer to do it as they have all the right equipment, you could even get them to do a voltage mod for you as well :D

Sure, as long as it is the same value and will fit it will be fine.

Good luck and happy soldering....

You beat me to it Phil.

Good point. If you lack the skill, better off finding someone to do it for you......

The only problem using a standard size resistor in place of a SMD one it soldering it in place. 10k is 10k, large or small. You may want get a third hand device to hold the resistor in place while you solder. I would also recommend tinning the resistors leads first. If you are of age, have a beer (just one! :) ) a half hour before soldering. It will help steady your hands.

thanks for the advice you guys. And, yeah, I'm 23....legally allowed to drink beeeeeeeeeer! :) Is there any kind of soldering 'glue' out there that doesnt require heat?

I would use a silver solder if you plan on doing it yourself. It melts at a lower temp. Regular soldering would be the best. Just tin the leads of the resistor, use a third hand and you should be ok....
