Hi all.. just registered..

I'm a noob to o/c but here to learn.. I've been reading up on o/c fsb, multi, mem, but am wondering about voltage.. is there a rule of thumb for what voltage you should use at different settings? or do you alter settings and adjust voltages to stable levels?

Cheers

Personally, i prefer to give the chip as much voltage as my water block can keep cool. For stability purposes. As far as a "scale" to go by, aint seen one yet...

And Welcome to the Forums. You have chosen a great place to learn about the inner workings of your puter....

You should generally try to stay within either 125% or 130% of your default voltage, depending on how long you want it to last. Going past 125% is going to bring its life down very significantly, so don't be expecting to keep it for too long. Going past 130% is very dangerous, and depending how far you go, may number your processor's days.

If i could get 2v i would sure be testing it to see if it corrected my stability issues. I cannot get anymore out of this chip than whats in my sig.

With a 1.5 chip, I wouldn't go above 1.85.

And I would only go that high very cautiously, with good cooling and a lot of monitoring.

1700s don't like a lot of voltage, and I really ****ed mine off when I tried to feed it 1.9.

IMO a good rule of thumb is 20-25% anything more then that I think you are pushing your luck this is of course depending on your temp's.

I lost an L series 1700+ to 1.75V. They do not like voltages one bit. I posted a warning on the temperments of these things somewhere in this forum. The damn thing died after only three weeks. I would suggest that for the U series chips you keep it under 1.85. For the L series chips you keep it under 1.75. For the old Pallies, just keep it under 1.95 ... oh, screw it, just cook the suckers and get a new chip!

I have found a stable o/c for my machine with stock cooling.. it'll do until I spend the dough on more serious cooling goodies..
