Hello all i have a Linksys Router/Firewall for my network. I used to use Norton Internet Security to stop popups when i browse the internet. I just recently converted to Mozilla Firebird and realized i dont need the popup blocking feature on Norton Internet Security because firewbird does it for me. So the qustion is do i need to run 2 Firewalls on my system which is the linksys router/firewall hardware and Norton Internet Security software Firewall or am i just waisting my time with Norton Internet Security and ill just uninstall it and use just the anti virus feature?
Thanks in Advance
Eddie

I would uninstall the Norton Personal Firewall. You dont really need it with a router. The only thing is I dont know if it will let you uninstall the firewall and leave the antivirus. :(

It should only uninstall the firewall. Keep the AV, and I would recommend you get Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D. And remember to keeps windows updated!

Thank you for your input. I have read that having 2 firewalls running can conflict with other because they each have different rules etc.... i guess i will uninstall Norton Internet Security unless someone else has other input that would lead me to believe otherwise...
Thanks in Advance

^^^ they can - but that is 2 software firewalls - a software firewall wont conflict with norton - if anything norton has no control over what the hardware firewall does

personally the router would be a better firewall - that is IF you can configure it properly :)

Yea, I read a lot on DSLreports.com having that second software firewall won't hurt you at all in fact it will help, but it will be pretty minimal. For the average user just a router firewall will do just fine.

Well my router is like 99.99999999% stealthed.... i think port 113 isnt but its closed i just leave it open for games etc.... so i guess i dont really need to worry about that... the reason i wanted to get rid of the NIS firewall is because its a resource hog and its annoying.. i cant even print or see files on the network without disabling it and its like i said i only really got it to stop popups and now that i have firebird i dont really feel i need it anymore...
Oh well i guess its a personal preference decision... and since talrw says it really doesnt help much i guess its best i just get rid of it.....
Any other input is appreciated and thank you for all of your responses....

FYI - NIS will NOT let you install the NAV (AntiVirus) seperately from the NIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They freely admit the 2 programs are (OBVIOUSLY) not "linked". There is NO REASON for this IMO - except to FORCE you to use the NIS since you WILL want to use the NAV (NAV is good - NIS has a paper trail a mile long with problems galore). Forced me to look for another AV - EVEN THOUGH I HAVE A PAID LICENCE FOR MY NAV "bundled with' NIS !!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Needless to say, I now run NAV Profesional 2004 ;) (No stinking NIS)

Later

yea i feel ya randyman i paid for nis and cant just install AV. Oh well... lets forget about this because this isnt a problem for me... i can get the AV whenever i want i just want to know if NIS is any good if not ill take care of it my way.

So there are 4 people telling me that either to uninstall NIS or it causes problems or it doesnt help if you already have a well configured router.... i guess im just going to uninstall this crap and get Norton AV. Thanks for the help guys...

BTW someone mentioned a well configured router is all i need. Would you consider a router that is 100% stealthed according to www.grc.com well configured? Or are there more things that i just dont know about...
Thanks for all the replies
Thanks in Advance

I use both the basic router firewall in my Linksys and software firewalls on all my computers for added security, but basically it comes down to just how paranoid YOU want to be. ;)

Personally, I am of the opinion that a serious cracker will get into ANY system they want, eventually, but that they would have little interest in any of mine.

Script kiddies and automated viruses are a much larger and easier to defeat threat though: either a NAT firewall in a router or a decent software firewall should be enough: both together are unlikely to be beaten by either of the common threats.

Norton products are another issue entirely- I don't like them or use them.
I do recommend ZoneAlarm (free version) as a personal firewall, and have used a few different windows antivirus programs, AVG being one of them. I am not sure what av is best (or available) for windows right now as I don't use it much. :)

btw ir ur refering to the norton system works cd or the norton internet security, there are individual folders, for both nis and nav, what i do is open up nav and install that only, by browsing through the cd.... thats how i install my nav with out the other crap

Uh - I tried that - you get "This aplication must be installed from blah blah" -= it essentially says you HAVE to install the NIS installer for the NAV installer to work AT ALL! They ADMIT this, as well! If you got it to work - you are LUCKY. I know it won't work for NIS - maybe System Works is different?

What about uninstalling the NIS and keeping the AV? I believe thats what I did....

2003, or 2004? Mine is 2004, and It will NOT let me install NAV seperately - even with going to the NAV folder, and using its Installer (there are 2 different installers). I get an error no matter which installer I try to use.

If I uninstall NIS - it AUTOMATICALLY uninstalls NAV with it in 2004 (at least MINE did)

Either way, I now have NAV 2004 Professional - and NIS stays of my system...

Yes, mine was an older version.

Also, Norton has found that people would uninstall then reinstall the product and get another year out of it. Norton has now fixed the problem. I think they write a key to the boot sectorto keep a product fron being "recycled" .
