I was looking at reviews for various video cards, and found almost every card has a review, runs too hot...had to crank fan to 100%

Is this the norm now days? the vendors selling overclocked rigs, which causes so much heat the included hsf cant cool the video card?

Even on my 8800, I had to run the fan at 100% or the video card crashes, sometimes VPU can recover...most times, no at all. The cooling inside the rig, is not an issue every other component including CPU runs cool.

My 9800 GT in inside an Antec 902 with fans at 35% most of the time. When under stress for games such as WoW or L4D2 it might go to 50 or 70% but nothing that I noticeably hear. Temperatures are 40-45 idle and 50-60 under load.

Hope this helps.

I was thinking my 260 was running to hot before since my 7900gs (R.I.P) would run under full load (furmark for 2 hours) at a nice 54 degrees. My 260 was running at 72 degrees max (just in Crysis) until I realised the fanspeed was constantly at 25%. After setting the fan control to auto in Rivertuner my temps have never gone about 65 degrees (furmark for 2 hours)

The thermal limit for my 7900gs was apparently 60-65 degrees and the limit for my 260 is 85 so it does seem the limit has gone up so people shouldn't be worried when their new card is 20 degrees hotter than their 4 year old cards.
