Last week, the cat woke me up pretty early and I sat down on the computer with a cup of coffee reading reviews for the 9800X3D. I don't know what piqued my curiosity, but I decided to peruse Amazon and Newegg for this CPU. Struk out on Amazon, but lo and behold it was in stock at Newegg! I ordered the CPU but was almost certain that it would be back ordered as over 600(!) people had it in their cart. However, much to my surprise, a UPS shipping label was created and in a few days the CPU arrived at my doorstep!
I am out of town on travel for the next month or so, but in whatever time I've had, I've been playing with the CPU. I must say I am pleased with the platform thus far!
Test Setup: Cobbled together from parts at work
MSI X670E Carbon WiFi (someone at work threw it in the trash because they couldn't get it to POST!)
9800X3D
GSkill PC6000 30-36-36-96 (2 Xx 32 Gb)
Thermalright PA2
Seasonic Focus 550W
Win 11 x64 (Win 10 is my preference but it won't boot without a GPU)
Initial Notes: New to DDR5 and AM5

- Man, FCLK on this chip is a monster, I could hit 2233 (!) without changing any voltages and ran Memtest for about 15 min with no errors (default timings). Not real life stable by any means, but I was surprised that the system POSTed
- My goal is to first get the lowest possible memory latency then proceed with OC'ing the CPU. Thus far, I've tinkered with MEMCLK = 3GHz (28-34-34-76) and 3.2GHz(36-38-38-115) with FCLK = 2GHz and UCLK= MEMCLK. The tighter timings yield better latencies. I've never satisfyingly answered the latency v/s bandwidth question. It's been in sticking in my craw since the DDR days (BH5 vs TCCD).
- Can someone point me to a reasonably detailed guide or give me their settings as a starting point in my quest? There are way too many voltages and timings to play with!
- My memory: F5-6000J3036G32GX2-TZ5NRW
- What are safe voltages for VSOC, VDD, VCore? I'd like to overclock, but not burn out my hardware. I will be on air.
