im planning on building a server for games and other stuff

what do you guys think i would need for a server capable of this?

It's good that you're looking to actually build a server for games. Too many people just stick an RJ-45 up their butt and call it a server. It doesn't work like that.

For starters, you want some fast hard drives. 7200RPM at least. Maybe RAID, maybe not. It's up to you on that. But get some good drives.

Memory. Lots of it. Get a board that takes up to 1GB of RAM, and max it.

A fast processor. Over 1GHz should do you well.

Video card doesn't matter much, since you shouldn't play on it, but use it as a dedicated server. Uses less resources.

And get a fast internet connection both download AND upload speed. And a static IP address is a good idea.

The is one mistake in Wa11y's answer. That is the video card recommendations.

While this may be true in some games, what do most games do when you first run them....they check for a 3d enabled video card. So you will need a 3D card in order to fool the game on the server that you are meeting it's specs. Throw in a 4 meg S3 Virge and try to make a Delta Force Land Warrior server and you cant do it because the video card doesnt pass the test.

To be safe you can still pick up some pretty cheap TNT2 Ultras from Tiger Direct.

But I will strongly recommend buying a 3D enabled video card for your server.

geforce 2 ultra?

Should be more than plenty.

One question I have, is what OS should be run? 2K server would be obvious, if not for the fact that 2K has problems runing some games. I think I've heard tell that XP has problems running RAID, and 98SE is optimised for dialup speeds, not broadband. And not every game has a Linux Port.

I would say Linux, if possible. If not possible, look for Windows NT4, 2000 or XP pro if you want 24/7 uptimes. Win 9x will run OK for a day or two, but isn't the most stable OS.

most games have a linux prog to run servers form anyway

I would go with XP. Yes, some people have trouble with RAID arrays but no physical problems. They have problems with benchmarking raid arrays using SiSoft Sandra and the problem is with Sandra, not XP. My RAID-0 array works just fine under XP. Most games are supported under XP than 2000. Some games that WILL run on 2000 WONT run on 2000 server. XP has better broadband support. XP runs 24/7.

I was leaning towards XP, but that RAID thing made me not like it. But it's good to know that it's just that Sandra can't benchmark RAID well in XP. That being the case, XP would be the one I would go for as a game server.

And OC-Rubix-Cube, visit www.dslreports.com and do a speed test on your line. Pay specific attention to the upload speed. And if you get 1.5Mb on the download speed, you're on uncapped cable, and I doubt that will last for long. Cable also has shared bandwidth, so the more people in your area use cable, either for TV or for their computers, the lower your speed will get. It's better to get a dedicated bandwidth setup such as DSL, so you have a constant bandwidth.

how bout a celery tualiton?

Durons will give a better price;performance ratio - a good decent Socket A board like a K7S5A and say 256MB SDR RAM or DDR RAM will be cheap and pretty decent.

I am thinking of making a server to just share files and is it just a matter of installing 2000 server or this there alot of setting you have to change?

We run W2K adv. server and it's just a matter of installing the software. If you use server, or adv. server, the OS just helps you set up user accounts, and the file, printer, user shares.

You can also find really inexpenisve servers on ebay right now. The used server market has dropped off considerably as corporate america has figured out that dedicated hosting is more financially viable than making a purchase.

2000 server and Advanced server are the WRONG OS's if your going to make a game server. Some games that run on 2000 WONT run on Server or Adv. Server.

Besides why cut your system resources by running an advanced operating system when XP will do what you need just fine. I'm running an entire domain with website and mail server (Exchange Server 2000 Corporate) on an Athlon T-Bird 850 with 384 meg of RAM and Adv Server and it is bone slow.

He asked about W2K, I answered.... I think it depends on the other requirements of the server, the game, and whether or not the system will support some kind of small LAN.

If the game supports a Linux server, and there is no need for a LAN, then use Linux. However, if this server is going to be not only web based, but run a few clients for some LAN games, then I'd use 2000.

First step of planning, know the problem you're trying to solve.

I have W2K pro at home and haven't found a problem with any games as of yet. I play simulation, stradegy, and first person while my roomate sticks to just one game, Diablo :)

linux is generally better at managing resources than windows... it does more with less in my experience... also you need quality components if you want it to be up 24/7
