shinney (sp?) plastic and vinyl dye

I decided to dye the fronts of my drives a single color. If you are familiar with Lian-Li cases there is a piece of plastic over the on/off swith and drive light, as well as, a strip of plastic on the front top. These pieces of plastic apear to have a clear coat of somthing on them. My question is has anyone ever dyed one of these and if so did you have to do any special preping of the surface?
