I am currently using an Ax500a and love it. I will be building a new system in a few weeks and was just wondering if another one would be sufficient with the new rig. Would rather be safe than sorry so if stronger is needed it is no problem

X2 3800/4200 or Opty 165/170 depending on budget
2 optical drives
1 floppy
2 Hdd's
2gb's or Ram
Video ranging from 6800gs to 7800gt again depending on budget
Still undecided on case, However likely 3-4 case fans, 120mm and 92mm most likely.
Also probably a media card reader
Also haven't fully decided on MB yet, Will be non Sli most likely. Have no intention of going Sli in the future.

System will be run stock or mildly O.C.ed probably 95% of the time. However I will want to push it from time to time.

yep thats the best PSU for under $100
I'd say that, only if you considered the strongest psu for the noise is makes. If you're talking about pure power, it's hard to beat the fortron 550w plg.

I've come to think the AX500-A is capable of driving any current AMD-based system; their power draw is amazingly low in comparison to current Intel offerings.

Got the first one from Actbuy for $78 with free shipping, They have them now for $79 with free shipping, Probably just go with them again since I had a pleasant experience doing business with them the first time

the title says OEM. did you guys get the retail boxed version for $78-$79ish?

i need to get a new PS. my fortron fsp-530 ($67 from newegg) died in a little over a year. since it was out of warranty, newegg wouldn't take it back. luckily i put it on my AMEX, which extends the factory warranty one additional year. so they reimbursed me for it.

i'm looking for a good replacement in approx. the same price range or maybe a little more money. fortron has left a bad taste in my mouth, but i'm willing to try them one more time i guess. any other suggestions for my rig?

I got the retail box version. Honestly didn't even notice it said OEM, I got mine back in June so it has been awhile. Actbuy processed and shipped the same day, Fedex ground did take their time getting the PSU to me though. I have been very happy with it, Very stable, Quiet and the sleeved cables were a nice little extra touch of class. I have no reservations about getting another one for this upcoming build.

bump...
or should i go with the Antec SmartPower 2.0 SP-500? it's currently on sale for $66/shipped at newegg:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817103937

(sorry to threadjack)
I've come to really like the SmartPower 2's. I've got a couple SP2-350s and they are very nice. I've seen SP2-450s drive large rigs effectively, so I have no hesitation in recommending the 500W version. At that price the SP2-500 is an excellent value and a worthy alternative to an AX500-A.

I got the retail box version and so have 2 other peeps that I had go there, I actually called then about that and said I thought I was ordering a retail item and it says OEM and the guy says they need to change it. He said as far as he knows they only send out retails....

i went ahead and ordered the antec. i'll give it a shot. if it doesn't work out, i'll order the fortron from actbuy, since they will probably ship the retail version.

btw, my fortron is really dead now. it was intermitent for a long time. sometimes the computer would boot up, sometimes it wouldn't. after it would no longer power my current rig (at default bios settings), i put it in an old cheap P3 500 MHz. it seemed to power it just fine, but only lasted 2 days. the pc shut off while i was checking email. i pulled the PS and shorted the green and black wires on the ATX connector... turned it on and the fans spun for less than a second and then shut off. i guess i'll keep it for parts.

thanks for everyones help.
