Should I Limit Framerates or Not?

I understand the power savings advantages to limiting my framerate to the refresh rate of my monitor in games. Is there any advantage to setting it above the refresh rate?

None I can think of... but that said, unless I see screen tearing, I don't limit my FPS ever as it causes input lag.

Thanks. Some have theorized that it makes game play smoother - something about buffers getting filled up more quickly. I was hoping someone with a deep understanding of the issue would comment. Input lag is not an issue for - I never notice it. But I can't handle screen tearing - drives me nuts.

Are you trying to overclock your monitor or something ? for example from 60 to 75/85 almost zero difference but to 120/144 (if your monitor/GPU can take it) there's a definite feel of smoother graphics.

So far only noticed input lag if you run the game in windowed mode

I have a UHD LG monitor. I have overclocked it in the past, but all it will do is 72 Hz at 3840 X 2160, and 80 Hz at 1920 X 1080 - hardly worth it.

I've run the game in a borderless window. I lost some FPS, so I run it full screen. I didn't notice any input lag - but I never have. I'm just not sensitive to that - I'm 55, so my reflexes aren't fast enough for input lag to affect me.

ive read a lot that frame limiting doesn't stop screen tearing. That just by limiting the framerate isn't like enable vsync. Not sure why, but its the reason people use vsync and not frame limit right? Otherwise we could all frame limit and remove the input lag and stutter vsync can cause.

You are spot on.. for some reason I immediately jumped to vsync when he said frame limiting. :)
