I am currently running a phenom II X3 720 BE and was wondering what the performance difference would be if i got a phenom II X4 955 BE?I do a lot of gaming.

For gaming, now? Not much at all unless you Play FSX or Supreme Commander as those are the only multi threaded games that use more than 2 cores (there could be more).

Probably no need at all, i was thinking about doing an upgrade like that also, but there is really no need. Might as well wait for 6 cores of if the 955 drops down to $100

955BE would be a noticeable improvement in games IF you overclock. 4GHz should be pretty easy with a 955 and decent cooler :)

But you could save money and get a nice high speed dual core too. The 550BEs overclock real well also.

Personally, stick with what you have, or OC it if you are having any game performance issues :)

Isnt 4Ghz easy with the x3 also?

I thought they had issues past 3.7-3.8. I did edit my post as soon as I hit submit though.

Do the 720s unlock to quads also? Might be worth trying IF one needed 4 cores :)

Just checked the BOT, not a 24/7 estimate of course, 1 guy hit 4.2 GHz on air compared to a half dozen on the 550BE

Think it is a good estimation that the 550BE oc's better :) Worth *up/down/side grading? No probably not. Dpends what his 720 can do though :)

GTA4 demands a quad.

Unless you're playing the games listed, it's not worth it.

I upgraded from a 939 3800 X2 to my 9550 I do a lot of DVD's under Nero Vision and it cut down the time from 1hr to around 35mins most of the time I just upgraded thou because I was sick of being 2 generations behind all the time.

I get my Denab 945 next week don't know if there anything better in AMD tech but the 945 will be a upgrade I think.

I would keep the 720. As an owner myself, I can vouch for it being plenty in just about all games. I have been through, Assassin's Creed, Crysis Warhead, COD 4 and 5, UT3, Pure and a few other less demanding games and all play on at least high settings @ 1440*900 (the exception is Crysis, but that played at medium fine.) And these are all playable settings (50+ fps).

I have amd 720 unlocked to quad .I was running 720 at 3.2 ghz ,and now I have it as quad also at 3.2 ghz .I only play COH at 1600X900 with dx9 at all highest setings .There is no differance in that game from [email protected] to 955 for me .My average is about 146 fps and min is 69 fps and that only changed like 1fps with 955. Vantage cpu score went up from 8200 to 11000 but that is the only differance I can see for now.

GTA4.

But even then a tri core still performs great, no need to upgrade imo. My 955 BE is mostly un-used, quite disapointing indeed. lol.
