SMC Router Question

I have an smc 4 port router, with three ports in use. One to my dad and the other two to my brother and I. When I'm the only one using it (playing star wars galaxies) my ping is fine and I have no packet loss whatsoever. The second my brother tries to play a game or download anything I instantly have a ping of over 400 with 50% packet loss. I know he's hogging all the bandwidth, but I have no clue what to do. I've read a bit of the stickies about DHCP and I checked the router setup and the DHCP is on. I am pretty sure I need to give each of us static IP's, but I'm not sure how to do that. What's your ip range right now, is it 192.168.100.x? or something similar to that? In windows 2000/xp right click on network neighborhood and goto properties. then right click on your local area connection and goto properties. you'll then come up to another box that has your NIC card, highlight TCP/IP and do properties on that. You'll need to know what the router's internal IP is (probably 192.168.100.1) and for your ip you'd use 192.168.100.3 Subnet mask is 255.255.255.0, and default gateway is 192.168.100.1 Any other questions please ask

The IP of my router is 192.168.2.1. Right now my IP is 192.168.2.100. What should I set my brother and father's IP addresses to as well?

Setting static IP's on the other pc's is NOT going to fix a bandwith issue.

I noticed some rather bizzare behavior when I was using my smc router and gaming. The router would seem to get tunnel vision almost when you were heavily using it with 1 game. Other machines in the network never seemed to get responses back, almost as if the router started forwarding all incoming traffic to the 1 machine.

Anyways I never really fully investigated this, because I upgraded to a more roubust firewall and router solution, so maybe this was an isolated incident. I agree though, static ip addresses will not help your bandwidth issues. A properly functioning router with DHCP should perform as well as if you had a static address. What type of internet connection do you have? Perhaps its just not up to the challenge of multiple people gaming on it?

I have a cable modem. It's the only one in my area. I have pretty much the same thing up at my house at school, and I can play the same game, and my two roommates can download anything or play games or whatever, so it doesn't seem like that should be the problem.
