I can't ever get anything done on my box! I have aquired the components to build an aweome box for my brother, Scott. I have a Dragon+ RAID, Tbird 1.4, Swifty HSF, 1/2 gig of Kingmax 2700, a pair of Barracuda IV's, 5.1 speakers, 24x burner, plus floppy/cdrom; I got a generic full tower and some mirage paint, and all the sand paper and rubbing compound I should need to do a good job. I got a 10" flat clear red window and a yellow cold cathode 10" light. I'm going add a handle and knobs to add style and functionality. I got a dremel to cut holes, and an Omega digital thermometer to use with thermistors I can drill into the hsf or mount wherever. I'll eventually get a radeon 8500 to put in there, but first I need to cut the holes and get the paint job done.
But! I can't paint the case until I paint the bathroom, which I can't do until I replace the sink and toilet, which I can't do till I tear up the ugly pink tile and put down something that doesn't turn my stomach...

Here's part of the problem-

I keep getting sent out of town. I just got back from 2 weeks on San Nicolas Island, doing a GPS survey for the navy. This was tough duty, here, I'll show you!

1st, I have to find a place to fish:

Then, I have to get my gear ready:

Then, I have to untangle the results of my 1st cast:

Then I have to yard up one fish at a time for each of 3 casts:

Then, I have to cook the things for me and my work partner:

With a tough job description like this, it's a wonder I can ever get any time to work on the box I'm building for my brother.

Man, that looks like some tough duty there.....
:D
But you might want to put this in a different thread, Gen Dis maybe? or um, gripes and moans?

Gonna get moved or deleted Im sure...

I put it here hoping to strike a chord with other people doing mods- If I wasn't ding the cutting and paint I could start slapping it together at night whenever I'm actually home. But the cuttingcan only be done in the day, (Today?) since it's so loud, and the painting will take a couple of days, which I don't have now. At least a full day, from 8am - 8pm. Tying up the balcony where I'm going to paint it. Which I can't do tomorrow because w have guests coming over...

Absolutely I'm talking about my computer project, specifically the hurdles one must cross to really be able to have a great box, with full mods. To have it, you have to do it yourself, and to do that you have to make time. There are so many things that get in the way. Anyone who has really pulled it off has had to sacrifice something in exchange for the the time and materials to make it hapen.

Sometimes it's a hard choice, too.

I just hope your not going to go RAID with the Baracuda IVs or you'll be greeted with a big disappointment:beer:

What's the sauce on the fish? Me likes to cook you see:cool:

Elaborate on this. I am about to do this....

There has been a problems with the IVs being slow on RAID performance using onboard controllers. HERE is the first instance I found on this problem. I have been looking for the supposed page on Seagates site but have not found it yet.

A few others;

Paul's FAQ

Why is my Seagate Barracuda IV so slow in RAID-0 configuration?

To paraphrase Seagate technical support, the Seagate is so fast that the RAID controller can't buffer the data quickly enough and so the disk has to read everything twice and hence runs much slower. So there you have it: the disk is so fast it is actually much slower. Seagate do not have a firmware fix at the present time as they claim they are waiting "for the rest of the industry to catch up". The problem has been reported on several different motherboard chipsets and several different RAID controllers. The problem is not specific to ABIT motherboards. Some people have reported success by putting the disks on separate IDE controllers. Seagate seem prepared to accept returns for users with this problem - contact customer support.

Thanks Sonny for the heads up. As you can tell, I don'y get time to check around.

Thanks again.

Hopefully a firmware upgrade to the HDDs or a new BIOS for the RAID Controllers in the future can fix the problem but don't expect it anytime soon. Seagate is suppose to accept returns because of this.

Rats! Well, I got the pair a few months ago at Fry's, don't know if I still have the receipt...Maybe I need a pair of Maxtors now. Or, I could use them in a non-raid config, but why have a raid board then?

PS I sauteed the perch in water with salt and a little pepper. I would have loved a lemon to slice up over things too, but no such luck that day.

The extra IDE controllers will give you more freedom I think. You can have 1 device per controller that should give you a boost in performance one way or the other.

If you started with butter then maybe add the lemon.... maybe if you wrapped them in Alu foil with some olive oil, lemon & herbs then.... fresh seafood is one of lifes little pleasures:cool:

So I just hook 'em up w/o the raid? OK, but it seems ike a waste. I mean with proper paritioning to get he most out of each cluster, I don't think I ned 2 hdd's for this box. I'm more likely to just get a couple of drives that work well with RAID and move ahead that way.

I pretty much have only one recipe for fish- poach in water or wine, with salt, pepper, and lemon. Low heat for longer is better than high heat faster, but don't overcook.

If the fish needs to be flavored wih a sauce to be palateable, it's not fresh enough for me, I'm picky because I live near the ocean an I get fresh fish all the time, whether I catch it or buy it.

Olive oil is helpful to keep the fillets from sticking to the pan, or if you're doing a BBQ, and there the foil comes in handy too, but I find that simple is best, just bring out the natural flavor of the freshest fish.

I like to have 2 HDDs in 1 PC just to have things better organized & to be able to back up my data easily. Everybody have there own ways of doing things & I hope you find the everything you need to get a refund or at least get to trade them in for better RAID drives.

Freshness come first with food & sauce should not cover up the natural flavors but help enhance them. I used to live right in front of the sea too. Those were the days:beer:

Yes, a dash of lemon, especially on a fish like sea perch, is key. The olive oil/Al foil idea works great, but open it up for a bit so it starts to brown on the top if you can, I like it like that :D I made a recipe I call Marguirita(spelling? I guess it's my recipe, I can call it what I want and spell it anyway too) fish, throw some of that Jose in there and you'll be pretty close. Combine ingredients in stomach and mix :D And fresh seafood is one of lifes BIG pleasures. I'm going to the store.... Fresh seafood in Wisconsin this time of year? Good luck!

Too bad about those drives, I would call, with or without a receipt, and ask to have them replaced.

I had the components for my machine for 4 months before I had a chance to get it together really. Had to wait for winter break to find the time. That was a long semester.

That's all, cheers all.
