HMMM...its a pity when threads breakdown into arguments...

Just consider one thing....Does the card "YOU" use ( whatever make:D ) enable you to play games with speed and visual quality that "YOU" enjoy???
After all , that ALL that really matters...:)
and my card does that just fine

The 9700 Pro was also produced at a no prfit margin because some certain chips were exspensive which is why they no longer produce ther pro version nad replaced it with the 9600 pro (not even close to the output of the 9700 pro. With my system OCed to 2.4 I hit 3dmark 03 scores at 4829 (no OC on the GPU) and at 1.8 stock CPU speed I got 4650 (no OC on the GPU). I thought it was a good card (It will be missed dearly).

The 9700 Pro on newegg is about $250 and the 9600XT is about $189.

One thing I would look at if you want to buy a new GPU is the ram, I would make sure that it is 256 bit not 128 bit and try for DDR2 though you may not see any difference between DDR1 and DDR2 so thats not a real big issue. Also look at the Gpixels/sec and Mtriangles/sec rates.

Personal opinion I don't like noise!

My 35 cents.
Nope, thats all wrong.

1) The 9700's were pulling in profits - ATi had no trouble with them. It was the 9500 series that ATI had trouble with, and they were actually causing a loss of profits due to sharing the expensive core of there bigger borthers the 9700's.

2) The 9600 series replaced the 9500's, NOT the 9700's. the 9600pro directly replaced the 9500pro.

3) The 9800 series replaced the 9700's, it WASN'T the 9600's that replaced them.

4) the colour of the PCB makes no difference to the ram. There are also black 256bit cards.

5) DDR2 is worthless. It only came on the 9800pro-256 anyway. it ran much hotter and gave around 5% extra performance i believe.

1) Did I get the 9700's and the 9600's messed up, I been thinking of too many things lately!

2) As for the preformance increase between the DDR2 and DDR1 it really depends more on the rest of your system, some people will see a small difference some won't see any. Game play should be about the same either way.

3) As for your refference to color i don't know what you are talking about. I know they make the red retail cards and the black bulk sale cards. But I don't know why you were associating colors to ram?

your not kidding i could fry an egg on my ram :) It actually feels like it maybe 130f or so no joke. Ill have to get my digital doc 5 hooked up.
Why do they bother with ddr2 since it only seems to give trouble? Does it help nvidia cards more than ati?

FX5900 is a great buy for bang for the buck, Cobray. Ti4200 is great for low end too!

DDR2 is like DDR of DDR from what I understand.

Well I need to see how much cash I get for PC upgrades. I made sure I put that on my christmas list this year. Then I want to get a 2.4C MO chip and an IC7-max3 and then whatever video card I can afford hopefully I will be able to get another 512 of ram.

Yeah i persuaded one of my friends (who was on a budget) to get a ti4200
He originally had a intel integrated w/e
He can't get over the difference.

DDR2 is able to acheive higher clocks that DDR1, that's all. It has a slightly higheer latency as well, so evenly clocked, DDR1 is a littel faster than DDR2.

But DDR2 can hit highere clock speeds that DDR1 ever will be able to reach. DDR1 has reached it's practical limits as far as clockspeeds go, that's why DDR2 is being used, and soon we'll see GDDR3, which will be able to clock much higher (and not use as much power) as DDR2

just bought a unknown brand 5800 last night
about US$108
i could oc the core to 580/970, i think i need better cooling on the ddr2
it is swiftech watercool

Since only one or two people who actually have the 5800's responded, here's my two cents as a proud owner of a PNY 5800 Ultra.
1. The noise isn't so loud as to be distracting. The only time it's really noticeable is on start up, and that's 'cause nothing's else has wound up yet. I listened to the sound bits of the card running and feel they are a bit exaggerated. By the time the games start playing and it kicks in 3d, who cares?
2. I've very pleased with the scores of the card. I've busted 17k in 3d01, 7k in 3d03, and 51k in Aquamark. I've played all the latest games with all the eye candy on and the only gripes I had were the first few runs Halo before the patch came out. After it was patched, ran @ 1280 x 1024 (native resolution for my monitor, same for the scores posted above) with nary a hiccup. (For those interested, the stock speeds for the ultra are 500mhz gpu and 1000mhz ddr2 memory, I think I have slid the GPU up to 505, but as all i'e tweaked it , or felt the need to.)
3. I've yet to see a card come out that will convince me to trade up....yet. I haven't seen the value for the buck. Maybe the next generation, but when they come out, I'll reassess.
4. If Nvidia had waited and gotten the 256 bus instead of the 128 bit, and avoided all the flak over the fan noise, we'd probably be spanking ATI all the way to the barn!
'Nuff said.

dzang ur scores spank mine..... :(
I get 15.5k in 3dmark 01 5.5k in 03.....
Guess the proc makes that much of a dif? I'm not having much luck ocing to an acutal ultra speed. I get 480/960 stable.... I'm gonna cut a side fan today though maybe that will help. (thats using the zalman 80hcp....) https://www.bestbyte.net/Product.cfm?ProductID=1406&CategoryID=6&Keyword=
My core dropped 10degrees vs stock but oh well...
What tweaks did u use?? :)
I can see the 1500 in 01 because of proc but it shouldn't be that much of a dif in 03 I wouldn't think..

Haven't really tweaked it per se. Just optimized the whole rig using tricks and tips picked up here. I really showed some improvements overall when I installed the Raptors and put the OS on 'em.

I've got a side fan that blows in directly on the card. Even with that, she runs mighty warm. The 5800 Ultra has about a pound of copper plastered to the upside as a massive heat sink. THe fan I installed blows directly across that.

so... whatever happened to the 5800? Did nVidia even release this card for retail, or did they just make it in limited quantities to beat the 9700PRO?

Does anyone have this card? How loud is it?

I have a buddy that has one and the sucker looks really cool but does get quite loud when you do gaming. It's a Gainward Ultra card, really nice but........ I just don't know about the price. A little high for my blood.

......
how in the world are u guys getting so high????
Is my bus holding me back that much?
I run 175*12.5 6/3/3/2
I disable all window features, close everything, all processes, apps, etc. Set it on high performance, no al no af, dx image on performance.... I even used rivatuner to set it on even higher performance under bitmap section.... So can you guys tell me what you do???
Thanks

You know i don't see why you ppl OC the vid card. Is it just for numbers or is it to try and force an older technology as close to the new stuff as you can. It has to be hard to see the difference with your own eyes during game play. The only differenc that you can see is in the numbers, or is that the whole point. To have impresive numbers.

I can tell a diff between my 1.83 and 2.24..... True I can't really tell a difference when ocing my card, but hey its free performance that I get rather than spending an extra $50 or $100 (processor wise at least).... I'm getting tired of my super heat mobo though. I put an active copper vga heatsink on the chip. Cut a hole in the side put an 80mm fan blowing over it and the ram. its down to 96f (once 124f before anything) but still it just won't do over 180bus stable. It will actually boot at 200bus but won't get past the boot screen.
