the 25% vs Canada and Mexico also has me really concerned. Everything is going to get expensive for the people in the US, because its not like we will magically get back all the factories.
Yup. It's starting with drugs and I'll bet it's going to seep into other things. Imma scurd.

I don't know how that part of the system works but can tariffs be put in place on the day he starts? Or is there some notice period? A short term mitigation would be to get as much stuff across the border as they can before it comes into force. If the next gen stuff is in stores quick enough then not all of it might get hit.

In theory day 1, but in reality they are going to have to be phased in so there is time for everyone to update all the systems that handle and track this stuff.

He has said that he plans to sign them on the first day in office. Maybe someone by then will explain how tariffs actually work and that the exporter doesn't pay them... But I doubt it would sink in.

Anybody see this? https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/trump-hell-slap-tariffs-canada-china-mexico-day/story?id=116218301

Yup, chit just got real. That 7900XTX is looking better and better.
They are not made in China. You're welcome. China isn't even allowed 4090 or 5090 chips.

You guy need to stop getting your news from garbage news outlets. He's using tariffs as a bargaining chip.

Canada and Mexico have already talked to Trump and are willing to help. I'm doubtful that any tariff will go into play.

I dont want to get into the politics of if this is a good bargaining chip or not, but the last time they imposed tariffs things got more expensive. People manufacturing and selling products in the US are not going to make the investment to move factories and jobs from other parts of the world back to the US for this. They will just pay the Tariff and add its cost to the price of the product. Its far less expensive to keep your margins where they are, and pass along the cost to the consumer than it is to upend your whole supply chain and build/retrofit factories.

Additionally its insanely hard to staff these factories, the types of rural communities that used to exist and were able to support these factories just dont exist anymore as most people have moved to cities.

Even the threat of a tariff is already causing prices to be adjusted, and I can speak from personal experience as someone who works for a Canadian based manufacture that we wont just eat the cost, the government offices, universities, professional teams, corporations, churches, and media organizations that are our customers will 100% pay for these costs. Additionally none of our competitors manufacture in the US, most not even in North America, so there is no option to buy from competing manufactures that are US based.

it would take us 5-10 years to start up a US supply chain, so we will just wait out this administration, at your expense.

Edit:// of this list (government offices, universities, professional teams, corporations, churches, and media organizations) only private universities, corporations, and private media organizations pay taxes. So not only will all these people be paying more for our equipment, but most of them are already tax payer funded, so when our stuff costs more it means your taxes go up, so you dont even get to opt out by not buying our product, or avoiding spending money with private organizations that buy our stuff.

Actually there is a specific 4090 for China. (4090D)

Watch democrats get blamed for this

Back on topic though, hard pass on 5*** generation, my 3080ti is still more than enough for everything right now and a while to come, think I'll wait to see what happens with 6*** and AMD at the time...

4070 Super Duper will have to last me. Or would have to go AMD honestly. Tired of 250w Intel chips too.
Neb is right. 7900XTX looks really nice right now. 9800X3D looks even prettier.

I can see that. With DLSS and GSync, I was ok skipping the 3xxx and early days of 4xxx. By the time I started to think of upgrading it just made more sense, even if I go AMD - see where prices lay.

I'm not. Also, what's so bad about 7900XTX? Yesterday, a Powercolor Hellhound 7900XTX was available new for $734 for about 15 min and it was sold out. You can still get an ASRock Phantom for $819 on Newegg.

What's more concerning is, even major retailers are selling top of the line GPUs higher than MSRP. I remember when it was possible to score something at MSRP, you just needed to be lucky enough to get it before the scalpers do.

Stopping illegal immigration is easy. Destroy any employer that hires undocumented immigrants. Fine them out of existence. But guess what? It will never happen because many employers (majority of whom are Republicans as they like to point out) wouldn't allow it. It's cheap, reliable labor. Unlike the prevailing (and false) narrative of immigrants coming here for "free stuff", they are one of the hardest working people I have ever met.

I don't remember illegal drugs being in short supply during the first Trump admin. As long as there is demand, and money to be made, there will be illegal drugs available. Maybe legalize them and provide fentanyl-free alternatives at low enough prices to not make it worthwhile otherwise? Of course, Republicans will oppose this too.

I also don't like the way he makes his statements regarding tariffs. It's always "they will pay a big price" blah blah. It's *us* who will pay the price. Finally, how many people could afford stuff if everything was made in the US? Will our wages go significantly up? Doubt it.

Damn it, now you guys have me second guessing my decision about getting a 7900XTX!

I will only say there is a reason why 7900XTX are on sale.

If there are enough products in official distribution, then there won't be scalpers. Who will buy overpriced stuff when a regular store has it cheaper? The problem in the last years was with production. When the largest countries get 50 cards in the first month after the premiere, then some people will definitely get them for resale. Some who work in distribution/import do that all the time, as they can buy stuff/lock it for themselves before the premiere.

9800X3D and 285K are still barely available anywhere, and I see this won't change until around December 12th. At least, these are the closest delivery dates in the EU distribution (typical shipping dates are usually close everywhere worldwide).

Scalpers are a symptom of high demand vs limited supply. It does feel like there is more of a rush to be first to get the new thing than in the past (like 10 years ago?). Demand for 9800X3D I can somewhat understand. It is "the best" gaming CPU right now. 285k I'm not so sure about. Without the gaming driven demand in the enthusiast space, are there really that many people who have to have that vs the 265k? Those 4 extra E cores aren't cheap! I see OEM version in stock in the UK right now.

According to TPU, the 7900xtx does on average the same work as a 4080 (not counting RT, which is much slower), but it can use up to 150w more power for the same workload. Hardware Unboxed says it's ~60w difference for gaming. It's not a bad GPU, but If I saw both at the same price, no contest, would pick Nvidia

Intel is Intel, and in large EU stores like Caseking, despite availability problems, 285k is marked as a "top seller." Gamers try to get 9800X3D, but not all are gamers, and some still think that AMD is bad. I know some who still won't touch AMD because they cracked dies in Socket A CPUs.

Someone has to say it, they're not at the same price. There's a clear gap between them with the 7900XTX sitting, price wise, between the 4070 Ti Super and 4080 Super.

I know some who still won't touch AMD because they cracked dies in Socket A CPUs.
Every time I think, AMD must have sorted out their drivers right? They find a way to disappoint me.
