So, who's getting a 5XXX series card?

Someone has to say it, they're not at the same price. There's a clear gap between them with the 7900XTX sitting, price wise, between the 4070 Ti Super and 4080 Super.
Comparing the 4080, not super/TI. Have seen them on eBay on/off for £600/£700 (used, but if in good condition, who really cares for that price). 7900xtx is still ~£800 new, ~£700 used.

They are close enough in the US to make you (me at least), think about it. Cheapest at newegg for a 7900xtx is $819. That's plummeted from the MSRP of $999. They, unlike NV, had to make some choices due to the where the product landed in the performance hierarchy. As such, the dropped the price to sell more units and be competitive. 4080 Super also had an MSRP of $999 but didnt need to drop its price. 4080 is a unicorn now it feels and has been out of production for a while so pricing on that, fair or not, is inflated a bit by that and strong demand.

I was looking at new only. At one UK supplier cheapest 7900XTX is £830, with 2nd cheapest quite a jump at £880. Similar story with the 4070 Ti Super at £700 cheapest, £770 2nd cheapest. Cheapest 4080 Super is £980 but there it is simpler with others closely bunched up. There is an out of stock one at £940. 4080 non-Super has gone, and would have been more expensive anyway.

I haven't checked other suppliers.

$819 vs $999? To me that's enough of a difference to think about if the NV extras are worth that extra.

$819 vs $999?
the problem is that you can't find any 4080 new these days to make a fair comparison. I mean, it is what it is, but the amd cards aren't suffering from high demand and out of production influences.

...$999 for the 4080 super....that would make me think about things, yes. But to be fair I was responding to the 4080... didn't catch the super part.

Every time I think, AMD must have sorted out their drivers right? They find a way to disappoint me.
It's so funny because it's the reverse on Linux AMD drivers are built in and stable while Nvidia are closed and unstable.

In my head I consider the 4080 and 4080 Super to be effectively the same thing. The only practical difference is the Super is cheaper, and the only one you can generally find now. So it makes sense for that to be the comparison point for "what you can buy today".

We look at what matters to us individually. I look forward to the next time EarthDog questions my use of Prime95 in discussions about ram rank!

On that note, I haven't forgotten that testing I said I'll do... last week? I just had more interesting things to do so it didn't get done! Don't hold your breath for that one. Some day I'll just be in the mood and it'll get done. Planning ahead doesn't work for me.

You can get a Gigabyte 4080 Super for $999 on Amazon right now.

....let's skip the politics, gents. First and last warning. :)
I'm not into politics but I am in panic mode LOL

I'm worried if buying NOW would be a better decision than next Thanksgiving. That's all. If I knew the prices won't go up a lot, I'd wait. My Asus laptop with 6800M is doing okay rn.

I haven't had any issues with Radeon drivers for my 6800M. TBH this was news to me.

I probably wouldn't spend 25% more for a 4080S than a 7900XTX, but I would consider the ~10% slower card (4070 Ti S) for 10% less cost than the 7900XTX too...just depends if I can/want to afford the FPS difference/what I'm buying for.

EDIT: Today, not much brings me to wanting to use more power, honestly. Heat and noise in my 12x12 office with a 13900K and 4090 along with 2 tests systems that are sometimes all running at the same time, gets warm (and I only like to run the window AC when Im testing).

AMD's new GPUs are so close, to me, buying anything right now before they are reviewed is taking aim at your foot with a large caliber weapon.

Indubitably*

Gentlemen, I think we've come to some kind of consensus as to who will/will not purchase a 5 series card. Tho the discussion rode the edge a little bit, I'm glad it got back :)

And yes, I'm still getting a 7900XTX.

So.....lunch?

When video card prices soared north of $500 that was a whole lotta too much cheddar for my diet.
Oh yeahs, I remember. I think I paid something like $400 for an Nvidia 5950 Ultra back in the day. G/f at the time was not pleased, but I wanted that sucker! :ROFLMAO:

My EVGA GeForce RTX 3060 cost $369 a couple years ago, probably worth $15 now, if anyone would even want it. But, along with several other lesser cards I did finally reach 1 billion points Folding @Home... It did take over 20 years, but was a fitting milestone to mark my retirement from the project.
