So, who's getting a 5XXX series card?

I wouldn't trust anything that "upgraded" from PCIe 5.0 to 5.1 with simply slapping a label onto it.

Lots of PSU manufactures took that shortcut.

So.... TLDR: Not even sure you can call s*** cables anymore (I mean, I suppose there are always scammers, but...), spec is 9.5a right? Known brands should sell AT LEAST that, which would be classed as "good enough, but not really, because it's toeing the line, get better". "Better" would be 12a-13a+, assuming the J2C thingie isn't an issue. But even then, the Nvidia plug is a problem, so get yourself one of those PMD2 that helps balance the load on all wires (which costs how much btw?)... Failing that, what, fire house insurance?

Lol, there's **** cables out there. That doesn't change much to me...maybe wording...

NV's poor design = root cause.
Use cables that come with your card.

Also, I'm emailing MODDIY to ask a specific question about the cable (whats the difference between 2024 and 2025 adapters like they said). 😀

Edit: and all this over 3 cards, one truly a users fault. The other thousands of 5090s in the wild are, for now, doing fine.

Not to put salt on the wound...
That's the 3rd issue on 5000 series. Loki psu (again), and user error iirc. See reddit link from above thats tracking the issues. :)

EDIT: @Kenrou - 5080 is loki PSU, nothing about user error.

EDIT: This is what the website says... so it looks like there is something different in the cables... at least from MODDIY

Our new cables incorporate significant advancements, including enhanced terminal and connector housing materials, along with thicker wires, to provide an additional safety buffer for the latest GPUs.

All cables produced before this period were designed and tested for use with the RTX40 series GPUs.

We recommend that all users upgrade to the new 12V-2X6 cables to take full advantage of the enhanced safety and performance features offered by this new standard.

Yes, 12VHPWR and 12V-2X6 are fully compatible, and there is no change in cable specifications. However, this does not imply that the cable cannot be improved or enhanced.

It is a misconception that a product cannot be enhanced, or a new product cannot be released unless there is a change in specifications. This is clearly not the case.
@yoadknux - THESE cables are clearly different.

I think the best advice for 5000 series users is to make sure their PSU is 5.1/3.1 rated and to use cables from the box only.

You also need to make sure the manufacture didn't sneakily change the compatibility version from 5.0 to 5.1.

Well I'm glad they changed something. Thicker wires is a mystery to me, if the spec says 16AWG, and you go to 18AWG... Do you "gain" something? I guess resistance is lower on larger diameters, but aren't the terminals the hottest points?
Anyway, I would be happy to test it. Might order it later.

Tbh. I have been in this stuff for a long time, but the first time I heard about the MODDIY was when that cable burned ...

FYI, prices for the RTX 5070 Ti are listed on Microcenter. A PNY card is priced at $750 (sold out before launch, wtf?), the rest are starting at $899. :(

You'd lose something moving to a smaller wire (16->18), no?

Yeah... If those are still the prices on the 20th I'm likely to jump over to AMD. $750 I can live with. A 20% bump just cuz? No thanks.

I wish to use AMD, but if its efficiency is like that of the RX7000 series, then I won't use it for sure. I wish to see a better-performing Intel, as B580 is too slow for me. In the end, I bet I will keep what I have for gaming and hopefully switch graphics cards for tests.

Yeah. Larger numerical is smaller diameter. Another wonderful measurement invention of the US of A. :ROFLMAO:

You definitely don't want to go that way.
