Hey, I was just thinking that I could make a real cheap pc with a 1.7a, since it's only $53 on newegg.com. These have the same core, and so should overclock equally compared to northwoods, right? If you just set the fsb to 200, you should get 3.4 Ghz without expensive ram or anything. Am I wrong about all of this or is it not realistic?

I wouldn't say so... S478 Celerons 1.9 GHz or less are based on the 0.18 micron process and as such you shouldn't expect more than, say, 2.2 GHz out of them.
If you'd like to go beyond 3 GHz with a Celeron, try a 2.2 or 2.4. Check the CPU Database to see what kind of results people have been getting with those.

The Celly 1.7 will be lucky to reach 2 gig since it's a Willamette core. You need to get a Celly 2.0 or faster to get a Northwood core.

cool. At least they are still cheap. Too bad I couldn't get too much bandwidth with it, as I have a couple of awesome sticks I could use.

Oh, they do ok with memory bandwidth... but it's the castrated L2 cache that is the big performance bottleneck with the Celly. They only have 128k of cache compared to the Northwood 512k cache. The Northy Celerons do O/C pretty good, probably on average 3.0 to 3.2 gig. But, if you are a gamer, seriously consider something else, because the Celeron is not all that good for serious 3D games.

Gee, makes me kinda want to stay with my duron, it's dirt cheap.
