well I was having random crashes on my comp, thought maybe it was loose AS2 on my cpu, so I tore off the hsf to check, while fondling the precious feather wieght in my hand...

I looked at the little sponge 'plugs' and decided to tear em off...

then I ever so gently put the hsf back on prayin not to hear the dreaded glass crunchin sound...

welll it works now, and my temps have also dropped quite noticably...

ummm, i dont have 130$ to throw away on a new proc, and i really am not gonna try that on my waterblock when i get it:)
p.s.:your insane!!!

Well, this would help, I'm sure, IF you could keep from killing your processor.

My trick was just to use the extra washers for that extra little bit of push with the Alpha PAL 8045.

eh, I don't think it's that big of a risk, as long as your careful...

I've done worse...

and I've seen ppl take many other riskier things.. for much less results...

oh and I don't have the money to blow either...

this was a "calculated risk"

I use the pads to my advantage in installing the heatsink flat without twisting in the thermal spoo. The pads keep the heatsink just off the heat spreader until I clip it. If the pads prevent the heatsink from making good contact, you've got a lame clip.

well said... For the love of god people get it together!!!!:D

clip has nothing to do with it..

and my hsf aint crapolla either...

there's only so much the pads will compress, and after that they don't move..

why don't u try it yourself? u can always stick them back on if it doesn't work...

don't knock it till u try it ...

pre mod temps were 3-5*C higher...

because for the most part we dont need lower temps im doing 41 load on my alpha 8045 but thats because i have it at 2.05 vcore now do i care that to be able to do 1.4 from 1.333 i needed to gain 7c on the heat? no because a CPU can run perfect at 41c load.. now if i need to raise my vcore higher pushing my to 48c to 51c then yes i might do that idea.. but its not worth the risk of crunching the chip...

I think the best way to tell if your pads are holding you back or you have a weak clip is to use an excessive amount of thermal paste.. and mount the sink... leave it there for a few minutes and remove HS... you should be able to read the lettering on the die. If not then you need more pressure. Also its a good measure to tell you if the HS is mounted flat or at an angle.

it can never be too cool... (within extremes)

if ppl were satisfied with mediocre then we would have never invented anything...

oh and yes u could read the lettering in my paste.. and it still helped...

your call ladies... something so simple, yet effective

oh and loaded with P95 my load temps are now equal to what my idle temps were...

I did the same thing on mine, I even added one on each spring, never see more that 36-39'C load now.

I took off the pads, but this is not a top of the line chip, so it wouldn't get me jumping as if I had a XP chip. Temps were about 3-5 degrees lower as well. Those pads are that mushy, they are pretty hard, and a single heatsink can be effected by a probe by example, and that thing can hold you back abit as well.

The pads should easily be compressed to the level of the dye when you mount you hsf, if they don't, that is the fault of you hsf, get a better one :p
