for QuadFX system, formely known as 4x4

they are lga1207, just like socket F, but socket F uses registered ram, where as QuadFX uses unregistered

as far as we know, the 2 are not compatible....

so this is for two dual-core cpu machines? i don't know much of the new stuff.

 Godman,

I just received my January addition of MAXIMUMPC....they have an article about the new AMD FX74 (1207 pins) socket L, it is indeed a new socket and not compatible with the socket F. The pin count is the same between the new socket and the socket F but they are not electrically compatible. The new FX74 (1207 pin) socket L do not require registered ram as do the socket F. The only motherboard available right now is an ASUS dual processor Mb using the Nvidia 680a chipset. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813131146

....I can't believe I am this far behind too....

So are these socket F and L chips much better than AM2/939?

Socket F: I think windwithme had an opty socket F review posted on here on OCF awhile back...but I don't think it was spectacular performance wise.
Socket L: Cost/performance wise my guess is no at this point. I haven't looked up any bench scores and the socket L is just now coming out (not sure if there are any reviews at all).

EDIT: i just checked...looks like I was wrong there was no review by winwithme posted for a socket F cpu...sorry about the misleading info.

Socket L is basically the same thing as Socket F but it doesn't require registered ram and there is only one motherboard that is going to made and thats the way overpriced Asus one. It is only for the FX 4x4 CPUs.

Socket f is the replacement for S940 as the workstation socket.

Wait a sec, I'm confused. Is any of this for the average user, or is this all server/workstation type stuff?

I had no idea these even existed.

I think socket F is workstation (940) replacement

Socket L is meant to be a dual dual core platform to bring quad core to the desktop (like average user ..no registered ram required)....at least that is what I am reading,

socket F(lga1207) is for Opterons 22xx series and up

socket L(lga1207) is a dual cpu platform for QuadFX cpu's(right now 2 dual-cores, later 2 quad-core K8L's)

windwithme did an Opteron 12xx series review, which is sAM2(like the opty 1xx of s939)
