What is the difference between sockets.. what are they? what are the differences, what what would be the way to go for a gaming PC. i would just like some general information on this

Thanks

Sockets are "sockets" for processors....and not compatible with each other. The Pentium 4's used socket 478, the amd's used socket 939, the core 2's use socket lga 775 etc.

Your motherboard states what socket it has and one processors it supports.

CPUs go in to Sockets. If you have a Socket 775 board, then a Socket 775 processor will go in to that board.

If you wish to go Intel, Socket 775 is the current line. If you wish to go AMD, Socket AM2 is where to look.
