Software Raid with WIN2K HOW??? I have 2 10gb western digital hard drives, and a 3gb to boot from.

I have heard about software raid without the raid hardware. Do i need any special hardware for it to work? I have 2 10gb western digital hard drives (1 is 7200rpm and the other is 5400 rpm) and i have another 1 to boot from (tim told me to do this). I am looking for a little more performance out of my system with raid. Will this squeeze a little more out? I have the following system :
Celeron II 700 @ 877 1.65v (1.7v default) cC0
Coolermaster AMD Thunderbird/Duron heatsink (works extremely well)
ASUS P3V4X (Winbond chipset, not 80, 85, 90, 95fsb's only 83, 100 etc.)
2 sticks PC133 Ram (1 is 64mb, other is 128mb) MICRON
WIN2K
2 10gb western digital hard drives
ATI RADEON 32MB DDR 166/333 @ 200/400


SYSTEM is perfectly stable in quake3, unreal tournament, 3dmark, everything. MY system rocks right now, but i wish i had more speed, but i think raid will help it out a little bit b4 i upgrade my mobo to a soyo and bump the fsb to 90-95fsb instead of 83. I just need instructions on how to set it up, and use it. I have been playing around for computers all my life from 8086's so i don't need dummy instructions. By the way i am only 15....not to bad huh?

I dont have any experience with Raid controllers. But I have never heard of anyone running it thru software as oppossed to hardware. Even if it is possible. You would get far better performance running in hardware then software.

I have heard of guys running there IDE controller's in raid thru a cable mod. I believe this can only be done on promise cards and onboard controllers though. I read it in a forum somewhere but I cannot for the life of me remember where.

I got the software raid to work, and it works far far far better than regular. If anyone needs instructions i can help them. My email address is [email protected]. It works just fine in Win2k pro just as in server. Here is my performance increase :

SISANDRA HARD DRIVE BENCH (WITHOUT SOFTWARE STRIPING) ---6000 APROX.

SISANDRA HARD DRIVE BENCH (WITH SOFTWARE STRIPING) --- 11650 APROX.

Much better scores, not to mention just looking around on the hard drive!!!

Never mind that software for Raid. It was for a friend. I just ran SiSoft on my machine a Abit KT7 Raid board, Tbird at 1 Gig stock FSB, 2 30 gig IBM's. If the SiSoft is not lying to me I'm getting a reading of 35511. I know the machine is fast, I just do not know how these numbers relate to real life time. Teddy G.

Windows 2000 supports RAID in software.
