Hopefully this is a pic of my idea for a float switch. This is just a basic concept. The box and lever is a small switch from radio shack. I wish I could remember the name for it, but it just has a lever on it. Anyway, if you attach an arm (probably bent) to it and put a styrofoam ball on the end it could be used in a bong reservoir to protect your pump and computer. All you would have to do is use a normally open switch and mount it the way it is in the pic. The raising water would close the switch and let your pump start pumping. You could use a second one with an LED (normally closed) for a warning that a shutdown is about to occur.

Just a thought.
 
Oh yeah... i forgot the other one. What about using 2 pumps (both rated for the amount of lift you need) fitted with a "Y" adapter on theoutlets into one tube? This wayif one fails you still have some flow even if it is less. It would also add to your flow rates while both are running.
