i have a creative labs sound blaster 128 sound card and i am a real newbee at linux and i don't know how to make it work. The linux distribution i am running is mandrake 9.2 download. If any one can tell me how to get sound running it would be of great help.

Mandrake should have configured the sound card for you automagically. You could try googling on ALSA to see if you can configure sound that way instead of through OSS (which is the default implementation).

Google or linuxquestions.org should have some help for you on this.

When you open XMMS and try to play an mp3, does it look like it's working? If Mandrake's using an alsa driver, you'll have to run alsamixer or alsamixergui from the command line to turn up the volume.
