If I only have two speakers will I be wasting the NF7-S's soundstorm audio? Right now I just use a stereo cable to connect my cmedia onboard sound to my decent dolby digital receiver. Obviously the audio signal is analog and I don't use any surround sound. If there is an optical cable connector for the soundstorm audio I could certainly connect that to my receiver. If I get the NF7-S but only use two speakers, will I notice any difference in sound quality(especially while listening to mp3s and playing games) between a stereo cable connection and an optical cable connection with my receiver?

Don't depend on it. Its buggy and drivers come about as often as you wax your car. Just my point of view but shared by others. And the higher your FSB the worse it gets.

I don't think you'd be wasting it, it'll still sound better. And it's not like it costs a great deal extra anyway. With that said, I agree that it's a bit buggy. One problem that I have is crackling when I start up DVDs (might just be because the FSB is at 200MHz, there's no cooling on the southbridge), it takes about a minute or so to go away. No real major problems though.

Overall I've been happy with the sound - I think it's a little better than what I was getting from my live 5.1 card.

I don't think it's a 'waste' with 2 speakers. You can always take fuller advantage later if you should decide to upgrade.

I likely will not be overclocking my system, so an overjuiced fsb won't cause any issues for me.

What about the sound quality difference when connecting to my receiver using a stereo cable and an optical cable?

Hmmm, three systems ( NF7-S v1.2 and 2x NF7-S v2.0) running FSB between 185 and 210, no sound problems. The sound is great in windows, merely not-bad in linux with alsa.

With two speakers, you will still be getting environmental sound effects if your games support them ( UT2k3 and Unreal II rock).

[edit - added this]

If your stereo/dvd decodes Dolby 5.1, then run an optical cable to it. The sound is pretty good for games, divx movies or just mp3/ogg files with the realtime dolby encoding.
