I have a Soyo SY-5SSM mobo that is integrated with audio and video(8 meg POS) with an AMD K6-2 500 MHz (I know it sucks its my brothers) and I have a spare Voodoo 3 2000 PCI laying around. I tried to put it in his comp and it looked like it installed and nothing would come up on the screen. I took it to my local computer guy and he said that since the mobo is integrated I couldn’t put the voodoo card in it. I didn’t doubt him but I figured you guys would know. Thanks a lot for any replies I'm desperate to make his CS playing better (he gets 4-15 FPS, lol)

You would need to disable the built in video in the BIOS if possible. The built in video is an AGP format and if you are in Win95 then you can have only 1 monitor at a time and if you hooked up one monitor to the PCI video then you will get a blank screen because it is defaulting to the built in. If you are in Windows 98(se) then you will most likely see something about Windos knows that a monitor is there and you would need to configure it but you can't go further because the motherboard is still imaging to the built in video card.

http://www.soyo.com.tw/ has the manual for your motherboard to help you go thru the setup

Thanks for the reply. So your saying that it is possible? If I wanted to disable the mobos video then where would I go in the bios? I'm running windows 98 so hopefully that will help. Thanks.

If you don't have the mainboard's manual or handbook on the CDROM that comes with Soyo boards, DL it from http://www.soyo.com.tw .

If the handbook is no help, you'll have to go through the BIOS with a fine toothed comb. To get into BIOS during the boot process, press the "Delete" button the instant the Memory ends the count-up during POST.

I I went into the bios and changed it so it uses the pci instead of the agp and installed the card and all that and STILL NOTHING ! This is really pissing me off because soyo should be a decent motherboard and even tho it comes with stupid 8 meg video it should allow you to upgrade it! Well maybe this is a lost cause or maybe someone else has some other ideas about it….

Could you verify that the Voodoo didn't get zapped using another computer? Disabling the internal video thru the BIOS would cauld the MB to search for a video card, any video card.

I went to the bios and looked at the “Integrated Peripherals” section, then 2 things caught my eye. “Init Display First” was set to agp and I changed it to PCI (still nothing) and the second thing that caught my eye was something called “VGA Shared Memory Size” and it said 8 megs so I changed it to none, thinking that it would try to use something else. Well no such luck because when I booted up it auto changed it to 2 megs shared memory, and proceeded to boot up with 2 damn shared megs of ram. Ive looked through all the sections of the bios and I don’t see any about any video or displays or anything (except of course the ones I mentioned). I'm starting to think it would be easier to just buy a whole new motherboard…

O yea i forgot to say that i did verify it in my good PC. Unfortunately thats not the problem :(

sorry you can't get the Voodoo up by itself...... hey if you have another monitor....with Win 98 you can run dual monitors one AGP and the other PCI...just a thought...

Well I dont see why that would work because even thought the voodoo card is there and installed, in the control panel it says that the SiS 550 (or whatever) and no other display adapters. When i hook the monitor up to it the yellow light doesnt even turn green (so its like its not even hooked up to anything). I guess from this experience ill never buy a pre-made PC ever again.

a very side side thought...does the Voodoo require a IRQ setting for itself most of the moderm boards do need them... Ya , I don't like pre-made PC...at mercy of the mfr.

I don’t know if the voodoo needs its own IRQ but when I put it in my other comp is seems fine, and that is a pretty new board, its newer than the soyo. I don’t know thanks for your help but it looks like nothing will work.
