considering the sp-97 is one of the best heatsink's out there currently, is the finish smooth enough from the factory or would lapping signifigantly help

the finish is pretty smooth, but if you lap it the temps are only gonna get better, so I would lap it.

Having been meaning to do this for a while I've come to notice this, if you change the heatsink a lot - meaning if you remount it every three or so months (with as5 you're supposed to do this) it would be a good idea to lap the bottom of the heatsink just to get rid of the residue from multiple mounts. Straight from the factory, you'll probably gain 1-2C, but nothing spectacular, though it never hurts
