I´ve got the default fan & heatsink on my gforce.I have tested the detonators 6.50 of creative, the 6.50 of nvidia and the 12.41 of nvidia and nothing. In addition I tested several directX versions, like 7.0;7.0a;8.0;...
My computer can be turned of hours and hours and it doesn´t hang until I play the colin mcrae2 or gp500.
The cpu temp loaded is 46ºc and mobo 33ºc. My specifications are:
asus a7v 133 (bios version :1004)
duron 700@700
256mb generic sdram
3,2gb hdd seagate
sb128pci
avermedia tv capture98
internal modem 56k
cd rom 52x and sony & cd recorder 8x

when i got my geforce 2 mx it kept over heating so i ripped that crappy heatsink off it and shure enough it was convexed and there wasnt any thermal compound on there just some clear doublesided tape so i put a nice lapped hsf on it and sinks on the ram as well now itll go up to 200mhz core possibly higher i havent tried yet

Da Whip, I replied to his last post, he has a Creative Annihilator 256. If that's the only game you're having problems with, check to see if there is a patch for the game to make it work with a GeForce, also play with the settings of the game, older games may not play nice with a GeForce, for example, I have an old racer-Test Drive 5 that I have to disable the W-Ram setting in the game before I play it or else I just see tires and shadows of the cars when I race, no vehicles, really cool lookin! It's obviously not your CPU, if it occurs in other games, could definately be heat or a hardware conflict, did you try disabling Pallette Snooping, AGP fast writes ect.. in the Bios, sometimes playin with the bios settings helps too. Good Luck!!!
