ok, people, i got this copy from dad like couple months ago, anyway, 1) it is the upgrade version, so i can only install it from 98s. anyway to defeat the process? i try to boot it from dos, but it won't boot, cuz it cannot work under dos environment. anyway, that'z ok, since it took me like 15min to install 98s...second question, no "msconfig"!! i tried to run it from "run" no success, cannot find it anywhere. no win.ini..sort of, i need to do that modem mod shown by takiwa, but since i cannot find the file...is it normal? i tried computer at our school, it too got no "msconfig"...strange!! help!!:(

oh yeah, one more thing, "Ctcl + Alt + Esc" = Task Manager, but if no can do under w2k pro if i am not directly upgrade from 98s...what the?

alright in ms dos here is what u gotta put. "X:\i386\winnt.exe" without the quotes and where x is, put ur cd rom drive letter. You put that to install a clean win2k, not over win98. Also yea there is now ms config but if u want it, i have attached it.

For a clean install, I started under 98SE, then had 2K delete the existing partition, create a new one, format the c: drive, and do a clean install from there. Went pretty painlessly for me.

unless your ISP has business services set up in your area, you may not get a boost from that mod...but on the lighter side, you do not have to configure your ports in 2K or XP...NT systems set your modem ports at 115200 by default...

Win2k doesnt have an MSconfig. You can download one though. im not sure where to find it, so here it is.

START>RUN>[drive letter]:\i386\winnt32.exe This is the upgrade command from W98. Both will get you there, but this would be faster since WINNT setup knows you are starting from a 32bit OS if you are using this command.

nice little trick MS doesn't tell you is that the ONLY difference between upgrade and full install is that upgrade ''LOOKS'' for a previous edition - so once you go to ''upgrade'' select full 'clean' install and you will be alright!

Stool:

i want to omit that 15 min of installing 98se.

jbell:

yeah, i know that, you can have you choice between "upgrade from 98se" or "fresh install". both options are clearly stated, but i all i trying to say is to boot the upgrade version of w2k, and install from there instead of install 98sen THEN w2k.

Bmxpunk86pl:

i try i386\winnt.exe under dos, yeah, it booted, but i have to the bs os told me that it had to copy all the files to hdd, which took about 40 min or long. After that, a message shown, "shut down, and 2k will install after u restart your computer". the problem is, after i reboot, the disc is not readable under dos, so i had to do the above process again, by this time, it said, have to delet all the temporary file, took another 15 min, and the whole thing just looped again..:( well, one thing, it did mention something like "smartdrive" everyone knows what it is and how to make it to work?

OK....use your 98 CD to boot into DOS, and start with CD support.
type "smartdrv" (w/o quotes)
Put your 2K CD in.
Navigate to the i386 folder
type "winnt" (w/o quotes)

When comp reboots, set your boot options back to boot from HDD, not from CD...

takiwa: i am still having problem using finding that "smartdrv" even i follow the exact order of your post...need to figure it out..

Have you tried booting straight from the Win2K disk? I have the full ver. So I do not know if that would prevent you from booting from it. Either way I would like to know.

no, u cannot, and i have explained it in my first thread.i think. basically, setup.exe is not meant to run under dos envirment or something like that, and if i tried to boot it straight from cd-r, then i will have a boot fail.

I don't know if this is available for the upgrade version but on the full verson you can make 4 disks that load the 2000 boot strap to start the install. It is found in the "boot" directory on the cd.

I was not talking about booting to DOS then running setup. I was talking of going into bios setting first boot device to the cdrom then sticking the Win2k disk into the cdrom and booting. This has nothing to do with DOS. And you did not say anything about booting from the CD in your first post:D I am curious why you are getting boot failure doing this. Is it because it is an upgrade CD or is there another reason?

yeah, no i can boot from dos, and get a clean install of w2k less than 40min..yeah baby. i think i made a mistake..i copy the whole disk down or something like that..i still need to figure out that one, it too me so long even with a 1.6 P-S? um..intesting;)

Bit confused with this thread but you have several options some already mentioned.
Make boot disks from win2k cd (program in boot dir).
Boot from cd.
Install from 98 (can do a fresh install it wipes 98 in the process if you want).
If you start from a clean hdd it asks you to put win 98 cd in to verify upgrade.
There is an option to copy all files to disk first supposed to be faster or you can copy cd to hdd before install if you use boot disk or upgrade from win98.
I've tried them all at one time or another but the difference in install time with todays cd's isn't noticeable.
It just takes that long to install Win2k:)

um..it used to take me around 15+ min for 98se, and another 30min+ for w2k, now is like less than 30min in total if i just copy down all the files from cd, then install. btw, don't really feel like of make a boot disk, 4 disks? no thanz..:D

My theory is that when MS writes a new OS they just do it onto the old one, never take out any code in case they need it.
If you look hard enough you might find win3.1 in there somewhere:D
