The month has rolled over and we get another month of stats.

New entries to the Steam Hardware Survey this month are:
  • AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT - 0.28%
  • NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 - 0.38%
  • NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 Ti - 0.28%
The three 5070 versions (if you include VRAM options) were released around 2 months ago. To make a big jump in a month might be suggestive of limited availability until April. I have noticed where I am, the 5070 is generally available with some offerings even below launch MSRP. Haters might try to spin the narrative they're not moving, this this shows otherwise. We're back to the "old normal" where units are in sufficient stock that retailer competition helps constrain pricing. If only this would apply higher up the chain too, but it is a start.

The 7800 XT is more of an odd situation. There was nothing noted until April, so either no one bought them until April, or something went wrong with the way Steam Hardware Survey reported it. Either side of it, the 7700 XT and 7900 XTX have been showing for a long time.

What isn't on the list is any form of 9070. One interpretation could be that, although they saved up units to make a splash at launch, they might simply not have the ongoing volumes behind it. Alternatively, the 7800 XT situation raises the possibility they also got missed in some way. Without raw stats, or some other way to 2nd source data, we might never know.

This now puts the named RDNA3 GPUs at 1.05% overall. Named 50 series is at 1.04%, so in the few months since release it is already comparable to years of RDNA3.

Does Steam pull specs from my PC or do I have to submit data? I've had Steam installed since 2007 and don't recall ever taking a survey or "submitting system specs".

You will get a random pop-up from steam asking if you'd like to submit your data for the hardware survey
Yeah I want to say they poll about 10% of their users per month, so you'll generally get one about once a year.

Strangely, the last few rounds I've gotten it when using my laptop, on which I only have steam installed for a few older games. Not on my desktop where I actually game.

I think on the 1st of the month a certain number of people are randomly selected.
I think it is random so can be at any time.

In theory this could introduce bias in their results if a particular type of hardware owning person is more likely to not participate.

Got a reference for that?

Any system ever used for Steam is countable, and with a sufficiently big sample it will average out.
