i think you just answered your own question.
to find the stepping, you need to know the s-spec. it is a 5 digit code starting with an s. you'll find it on the box and cpu.
it'll be printed at the end of the prod code on the box.
once you have the s-spec, go here
http://processorfinder.intel.com/scripts/list.asp?ProcFam=483&CorSpd=ALL&SysBusSpd=ALL&PkgType=ALL
and match the s-spec in the list and you'll find the core stepping. among other things.
