Is there any way to tell the stepping of your cpu by software means??? I absolutely do not want to take the HSF of my proc to look..

I have already chipped and ruined two procs this year (a XP1600 and a duron 1ghz) If I chip another, my wife would :argue: and as we all know that is not good...;)

What heatsink are you using? Aren't you the one mentioned in a recently post? (j/k)
The best thing you can do is to order a shim or cpu guard so you won't chip the cpu unless you apply 700lbs of preasure :)

I'm using a Thermo Engine 4210 (the cheapo one with the solid core) with a 80mm 3000 rpm fan. It does a decent job of cooling a XP [email protected] 1.87v (150 fsb) 44c at idle/49 after an hour of playing Unreal Tournament..

It isn't the same HS that I chipped the cores with (a cheapo all copper job with a horrible clip that I picked up at the bargain bin at the local comp shop) so thats not too big of a deal.. I just don't want to take it off unless absolutely neccessary..

I was just curious if I had some kind of advantagious stepping that would allow me to reach 166 fsb with high quality memory (I have genric "elixir" branded DDR right now) and a good HSF..

Don't know what post you are talking about, but I doubt it was me... :)

I don't want to take off the heatsink too because i would have to reapply the thermalpaste and wait some days for the AS to settle in, i'm using a PAL8045 and is idiot proof (my first custom built computer) it has 4 screws and springs that applyies an equal preasure to prevent propblems.
BTW the thread is http://forum.oc-forums.com/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=79785 this thread,
