Hello,

My understanding is that P4's now ship with an AVC Sunflower as their stock HSF. I just bought a 2.0A P4. How can I tell if my HSF is a Sunflower? Should it say it clearly somewhere on the HSF? The only writing I can find on mine besides the Intel sticker is the name "FOXCONN" engraved in the plastic frame. The packdate on the processor box is 03/08/02. I'm guessing a have the non-Sunflower HSF. Can anyone tell me how to be sure?

Thanks in advance,
Eggroll :D

I got a 1.8a 3 days ago and it wasn't an avc sunflower or a rebranded AVC sunflower clone I recieved, pack date was feb. 'somethin' 2002

If it doesnt look like this heatsink below, its not a Sunflower

:eh?:

EDITED THIS: I ALWAYS FIND THE TRUTH.... READ THE WHOLE THREAD TO SEE WHAT IM TALKIN ABOUT.

heres the INTEL avc Sunflower

Thanks, Silversinksam. It looks like mine is not a Sunflower.

I too was under the impression that the P4's were going to start shipping with the AVC sunflower HSF. However it appears that older stock is still on the shelves or Intel hasn't gotten around to boxing the sunflower yet. I'm on hold to build a system and would prefer the sunflower to the older HSF. Has anyone purchased a boxed CPU and gotten the sunflower with it and if so, which Mhz CPU, which vendor and when did you receive it?

I'm pretty sure I read it on one of the better hardware sites such as this one, Anandtech.com or Tomshardware.com Seems like it was nuttin more than a lil blurb?

SunFlower HSF boxed with P4

Ok folks, I'm certain I read that the AVC Sun Flower HSF was going to be boxed with the retail version of the P4's in the near future. However I can't seem to find the webpage that claimed this. If anybody knows the address to this blurb please post a link.

Ok here is what AVC replied to my email

Hi Robert;
Interesting rumor......may I ask where you heard this rumor? Can you refer me to any website or magazine article? You are not the first person to ask this, so I am curious.
Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks

Rumor has it that Intel is going to be boxing the Sunflower with their new P4 processors is this true? Thanks.

Sorry guys guess its not true......

rlemieux,

The response Mr. Brown sent me was similar but a lil more intersting than his response to your email.

"Thank you for your email. Where did you read about this info? I'm curious,
because nothing has been finalized yet. Can you refer me to the website or
magazine?
If you don't mind me asking....what line of work are you in? Is this for
personal or business use?
I look forward to receiving your response.

His response of "nothing has been finalized yet," leads one to think the talk may be true. A search on Google came back with an exact hit on "AVC sunflower to be boxed with intel." It found it on overclockers.com, but the link was dead. A few minutes later the search would'nt even find the link again. Possibly removed after trouble brewed? Mr. Brown was really nice and responded to my email in 1 hour and 15 minutes......practically unheard of in the world of tech support. I only wished I could produce a link for him. So far the best I could do is answer his question regarding my personals.

Yeah he was very polite. I emailed him and gave him the link to the post, but that was the best I could do for him....

What do you mean by "I emailed him and gave him the link to the post, but that was the best I could do for him...."? You gave him a link to what post? The article that stated the AVC was to be boxed with the CPUs or a link to this forum posting? If you have a link for the original news blurb I'd love to reread it to make sure I didn't misinterpret it.

Sorry I should have said thread, I gave him a link to this tread. It was the best I could do for him. I cant find anything online anywhere.....

To be honest with ya, I hate to say I think that I've exhausted my efforts to find the link. I've spent 5-6 hours attempting to find it. And yes, I think I did find it originally on Overclockers.com, but I think they nixxed it. But no matter what the case, I'll most likely get myself one of Mr. Brown's super coolers to cool my next PC..... an OC P4 1.6. Thanks to all who have contributed in the hunt.. in case someone does find it, please post it here.

DEAD THREAD.....I'd assume?

If you gonna get a cooler for overclocking go with the Alpha or the Swifty. I havent seen any Sunflowers sitting on top a overclocked board. It is better than the stock, but not as good as the Alpha or the Swifty.

If it came with the CPU I would say fine, but if I am going to go out and buy a cooler, its not the one I would get.

I concur, rlemieux is correct. Something else odd that pic looks like a sunflower HS but with an intel fan assembly on it. My sunflower does'nt have those little curved plastic shrouds there below the fan, like the stock intel unit. Something else kind of odd is my mobo was designed for the Northwood and shows pics. of installation of HSF, and geuss what its a sunflower. Also I bought it months before the Northwood release. So maybe the deal fell through for AVC. Also picked up a new 1.6A last weekend, no sunflower.[edit] Mobo manual shows picture of HS on cpu with no fan and you can clearly see AVC on top.

My asus mobo manual is the same generic looking sunflower pic with an intel fan. I have an P4T-E. And like I said, if it came with it, I would use it, but If I gotta buy one, the Swifty or the Alpha is the one. With the Sunflower you are not looking at a whole lot of improvement over the stock heatsink and fan. I am running my stock heatsink and fan, getting rid of a Thermaltake Dragon Orb and a Thermaltake Volcano 7+ if anyone is interested. With the stock heatsink and fan I am running idle at 36-37C and full load at like 44C. The Sunflower may do about 1-2C better, maybe.

Your not crazy I read that article that they will be using a Heatsink that looks EXACTLY like the avc sunflower....Perhaps AVC is making a contract to produce them for Intel without the AVC name.
Joe pointed this out on the frontpage a month or so ago....he found a picture and asked, 'Doesnt this look exactly like an AVC sunflower' or words to that effect. The link pointed to a Trade show where a guy had the AVC look alike in his hand.

It was an AVC sunflower or an exact copy of one. Joe didnt write the article, just redirected to the article in question.
